Like so many other couples these days, the Toronto-area business executive and her husband put off having children for years as they built successful careers. Both parents were in their 40s — and their first son just over a year old — when this spring the woman became pregnant a second time. Seven weeks in, an ultrasound revealed the Burlington, Ont., resident was carrying twins. “It came as a complete shock,” said the mother, who asked not to be named. “We’re both career people. If we were going to have three children two years apart, someone else was going to be raising our kids. ... All of a sudden our lives as we know them and as we like to lead them, are not going to happen.”
She soon discovered another option: Doctors could “reduce” the pregnancy from twins to a singleton through a little-known procedure that eliminates selected fetuses — and has become increasingly common in the past two decades amid a boom in the number of multiple pregnancies.
Selective reductions are typically carried out for women pregnant with triplets or greater, where the risk of harm or death climbs sharply with each additional fetus. The Ontario couple is part of what some experts say is a growing demand for reducing twins to one, fuelled more by socio-economic imperatives than medical need, and raising vexing new ethical questions.
Experts question whether parents should choose to terminate a fetus just because of the impact the child would have on their lives, and note that even more medically necessary reductions can trigger lifelong angst and even threaten marriages.
The mother said the Toronto doctor who eventually did her reduction performs several a month.

As a mother of twins, (B/G) this is beyond words.
I knew of a woman who was implanted with three IVF embryos. She became pregnant with all three, and one split. After a reduction of two, she gave birth to two nonidentical twins. Therefore, she either eliminated the identical twins, or that of one of her fraternal twins.
Mind boggling ...

I don't know how anyone can read this and not be absolutely stunned at how selfish and callous this woman is.
Reduction abortions are the consequence of a society that approves of “fertility doctors”. The procedures used commonly produce multiple embryos. Most people in our society don’t believe embryos are people therefore some will be killed.
More selfish, self-absorbed people I’ve never heard of.
This is sickening beyond words.
Cold blooded and cruel. Any abortion is, but picking out one twin to kill seems to even add a level of twisted morality. The two remaining kids, especially the surviving twin, can’t help but have a chill run down their spine when they’re older and hear about it.

And, um, ruin your daughter's twin sister's day.
The conscience gets dulled by small compromises with evil, (not that this is a small one), and becomes more accepting of greater and greater ones.
I wouldn’t wish this couple on a dog.
Can you imagine the “survivors “ guilt the remaining twin will have if they ever learn of this?
Many years ago I knew a woman that found out she was pregnant with children 5 & 6 . All her children were close in age.. she pled with her doctor to do something. He gave her a medicine that would cause an abortion of the pregnancy .
She took it and thought she had “lost” the babies.. a month later she found out only one of the babies had been murdered. She carried the survivor to term .
I could not help but wonder every time she looked at her child..did she think of the one she killed??
I pray that guilt follow this couple the rest of their lives ...
Several years ago, my brother's sister-in-law was pregnant with twins and one of the babies died around six months of pregnancy. To reduce the risk to the live baby they didn't do any surgery, so there was one stillborn and one life birth.
When the little boy was around four years old they told him about his dead twin brother, he had ALWAYS known that there was a missing brother.
How disturbing and reprehensible.
I can just imagine how the surviving twin will think when told years later. It will be shocking and affect how that person sees everything knowing they could have been the one aborted and the unique twin connection will haunt them mentally IMHO.
I am literally in tears.
