Reagan birth centennial stamp debuts
The Washington Times ^ | December 13, 2010 | Mark A. Kellner

Posted on 12/13/2010 12:06:08 PM PST by jazusamo

If it was "morning in America" for President Ronald Reagan, a new commemorative postage stamp due in February to mark "the Gipper's" birth centennial will forever view the sunrise.

The new commemorative stamp, whose design was unveiled Monday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., always will be valid for a 1-ounce first-class letter, the U.S. Postal Service confirmed. It officially will be released at the library on Feb. 10, 2011, four days after the 100th anniversary of Reagan's birth.

Texas artist Bart Forbes did the portrait, based on a 1985 photograph of Reagan taken at Rancho del Cielo, near Santa Barbara, Calif.

The design was published first in Linn's Stamp News, a hobbyist publication. Earlier this year, Linn's broke the news that a Reagan Centennial postage stamp would be released.

Although the preliminary design shows a 44-cent value, the postal agency recently announced that all commemorative, or special, issues will be inscribed with "Forever," instead of a face value, meaning they would sell for the then-current first-class rate but would remain valid for first-class mail even when rates increase.

A USPS spokesman who asked not to be identified by name said a revised version showing the "Forever" inscription will be released Dec. 28.

I was happy with just “National”. I don’t like so many things named for people - it’s boring, awkward and alienating. Plus a waste of money when adding/renaming the place - all the changes that have to be made in signs, paperwork, etc.

As a conservative, I was really ticked when Baltimore-Washington Inter. added “Thurgood Marshall” to the name. Overrated socialist racist, of course because he’s black. It’s an extremely cumbersome name now. Ridiculous.

Even after seeing you handle your busy schedule, I still don’t understand how you do it and maintain your sanity. You are amazing!!

Wine is back up to $2.97 at Walmart ;-). But I didn’t get any. We had champagne last night to celebrate the GOP takeover of the House of Representatives and the approval of the miracle for the beatification of Pope John Paul II. Today it’s back to losing weight.

Cub Scouts tonight. I hear there’s another new Tiger Cub coming. We’ll have to do a “getting to know you” game.

It is morning here as well! AND I am in a teleconference. What are the chances?

I completely agree. I remember when half the country got renamed "Kennedy" after JFK's assassination.

Still, we take the scraps we get. If it explodes one liberal head, that is better than nothing.

For a dollar more at Smith’s, (Kroger) I can get twice as much wine on the Inglenook label. :o])

I can’t recall when I last had champagne, though I did think of it for New Year’s.

It’s a good sign that the Constitution was read today. More people need to read it, hear it and take heed. America won’t go down without a fight.

Good luck with the new Tiger Cub!

Morning and a teleconference? Is that anything like “Day of the Triffids?”

Sort of. More like "Day After Day of the Triffids."

Are triffids like tribbles?

Triffids are not friendly. They do, however, die in salt (sea) water. And fuzzy cuteness in not in their repertoire.

I had not known it had been made into a movie. I’d read the book back in the mid-60s. The triffids didn’t look anything like I’d envisioned, but I don’t know if it was from the book cover or confusion with a three-legged mobile plant in a different book.

My only problem with the movie was the noise the plants made. I mean, who knew? “Little Shop Of Horrors?”

Brian Aldiss’ “Hothouse” was the book I was trying to remember.
