Reagan birth centennial stamp debuts
The Washington Times ^ | December 13, 2010 | Mark A. Kellner

Posted on 12/13/2010 12:06:08 PM PST by jazusamo

If it was "morning in America" for President Ronald Reagan, a new commemorative postage stamp due in February to mark "the Gipper's" birth centennial will forever view the sunrise.

The new commemorative stamp, whose design was unveiled Monday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., always will be valid for a 1-ounce first-class letter, the U.S. Postal Service confirmed. It officially will be released at the library on Feb. 10, 2011, four days after the 100th anniversary of Reagan's birth.

Texas artist Bart Forbes did the portrait, based on a 1985 photograph of Reagan taken at Rancho del Cielo, near Santa Barbara, Calif.

The design was published first in Linn's Stamp News, a hobbyist publication. Earlier this year, Linn's broke the news that a Reagan Centennial postage stamp would be released.

Although the preliminary design shows a 44-cent value, the postal agency recently announced that all commemorative, or special, issues will be inscribed with "Forever," instead of a face value, meaning they would sell for the then-current first-class rate but would remain valid for first-class mail even when rates increase.

A USPS spokesman who asked not to be identified by name said a revised version showing the "Forever" inscription will be released Dec. 28.

This must not be the Vegas trip?

Spooks, eh? There are a few around the farm. They add to the charm. :-)

Yep, there’s no mistaking when you’re near a chicken farm during the summer. OOF! Much worse than being close to cattle farms.

It is, but I am way out of town on personal business tonight, returning sometime tomorrow and hopefully visiting 'Face on my way back in.

It's nice not being in Vegas tonight. NO jingle-jangle machines anyway, dirty "cards" everywhere downtown. I try not to look at them when I'm walking the Strip... but I also try to avoid the Strip. It is TOTAL INSANITY, in my most humble little opinion.

I don't know what people see in this place, though I haven't checked out the interiors of the casinos, which some colleagues described today as dramatic. I stayed at the Caeser's Palace(?) in Atlantic City NJ, and the description of the one here matches, but the architectural "effects" are quickly lost amidst the voluminous efforts to separate your money from yourself.

I mean, geez, just look at the exteriors of these buildings. An inefficiently shaped pyramid, burning tens of thousands of kilowatts or more to send massive amounts of photons skyward in the hope that a tiny fraction will be reflected or refracted back, to simulate the imagined effect of some mysterious "power", just to lure in the rubes? (It works, btw.)

Maybe it's just that it's a party town and I'm not a party animal. (One of the nice things about joining my frat in college was I got lots of uninterrupted time for study, unlike the dorms. Seriously. Ask LoM.)

Good night all. It’s past midnight local time, 11 PM my time, and I need to rest up before my drive back tomorrow to Sin City. But at least it’s to re-engage the innocent fun and joy of technical standards committee meetings.

Good morning! OldTax-lady just called to wish Vlad a happy birthday, but I was kind of awake already. She said they might come up for a day next week, as it occurred to Dad that he hasn’t seen the boys recently.

Sion’s description of Sin City is accurate. Which is why I live out here in Hooterville Junction. By contrast, the nickname is also accurate.

If I were a gambler, which I never have been, I would choose one of the small local casinos to frequent. The food is good, not expensive, and people win more often.

My reason for living here is the fact that it’s the warmest part of my native state.

That cat is fearless!
Good morning. I managed to sleep almost 10 hours last night, but of course, I woke up still tired. That’s the nature of the beast.

I’m looking forward to breakfast with sion. He’s always fun!

Pig farms are really bad, but there aren’t any in this part of the county. Maybe over east toward Marshville ...

DP has taken some people to church, and I have all the little boys here nattering, and Ash napping in the sun. I guess I should take Frank upstairs to get dressed.

Good morning, I think.

Long day ahead -- it wraps up 14 hours from now, when I can head to the hotel and check in.

Got a note from 'Face about where to meet. But I have a bit of repacking to do here before I can head out; LoM will understand if I say "shirts."

There’s a pig farm in North Las Vegas. It’s been there for 40 years or more, but now it’s surrounded by homes. And dontchaknow? People are complaining about the stench...

In Virginia Beach, they built new subdivisions where there had been pig farms days earlier. People who’d been there for a while thought it was hysterical.

Yah. So do long time Valley Folk. McCarran and Nellis AFB have been here “forever,” but people in the flight paths complain about the noise. It’s not so bad around Nellis - we just call it the “sound of freedom.”

Church. I’d forgotten we have a parish in LV. But it will be too late to attend Mass. Oh well.

I grew up around airfields, so the sound of planes is very restful.
