Not too long ago, there were articles posted on F.R. about houses being listed in Detroit for $1.00 - no takers.
Detroit hasn’t elected a Republican mayor since 1961
My father-in-law has some Kodachrome 8mm movies of Detroit that were shot about that time. They are about the only footage I’ve seen where the place did not look like London after the Blitz.
I don’t like that idea.
Some of them may move to Virginia — and we’ve already got enough Yankee invaders/refugees here as it is.

He was asked if he fired them because it was illegal for city employees to go on strike.
He said something to this effect: "No, I fired them because we obviously didn't need them. They didn't show up to work for a week and the bus system ran as if nothing was out of the ordinary."

In 1968 Richard G. Hatcher became the first African-American mayor of Gary, Indiana and served until 1987. If you listen to Hatcher’s speeches and see his policies, it wasn’t his race that drove Gary into the gutter, but his politics.
When he was elected Gary was 50% white, yet in a short time Gary became nearly all black.
The politics of race, unionism, faction and socialism are what did Gary in, not white racism.
We’ve got to make sure the real history gets taught. We cannot let people pretend that America’s cities failed because of Wall Street or RE investments gone sour.
The cause of failure will always be socialism in whatever form that economic hydra takes.
It looks like a prime place to shoot the series “The Walking Dead” without need of props!

My brother had quite a few pieces, old barrister bookcases, a large conference table with the matching chairs and he filled his condo in Philly with what came out of the depot...I have a beautiful 7 piece hutch he gave me, 2 pieces are shelves, one piece has large narrow drawers for railroad plats and engineering plans, it has another piece that has 2 doors, the top has a beautiful cornice and the whole thing sits on a bottom piece. There are locks between each section to hold it as one piece. The locks are hidden within the bottom of each section...it has a brass name plate, but I have not found the company anywhere on the internet...quite unique. It stands 7 foot tall...
I have never seen another one like it. The shelves are a set back from the pieces on the bottom...Also have the key that locks the doors and drawers up....
What wasn't taken by the employees was just left behind for the vandals to destroy. Probably worth quite a bit of money to a collector, but just busted up....
There is a web site that takes you through the depot as it is and some pictures of as it was....what a waste...

The 800 pound gorilla in detroit is called forced bussing. Both black and white that could afford to moved out...along with their tax money...then they had 20 years of Coleman Young, that great mayor that told detroiter to take their crime the other side of 8 mile road....the northern border of Detroit...then he handcuffed the cops and they moved out, the ones left don’t give much of a damn, they get attack when trying to stop crime. Fire engines got stoned during the riots. The city is still burned out from that little problem...Coleman Young was the biggest racist in the country and that says alot...if you were white, you just weren’t right...
Actually, what that does is open the area up for private operators. I live in such a place ~ America's richest county by some standards ~ all our garbage and trash is picked up by private competitive firms. Any trash hauler can go into any district and get customers.
It's probably a good idea to remove the hand of government from the garbage and trash.
The director Paul Verhoeven or the writer nailed it in this movie circa 1987. Detroit - totally bankrupt, crumbling, corrupt - a war zone. The idiocy of TV as the subhuman thugs in the movie along with the sheeple drooling TV watching masses are easily amused and distracted by the cr*p on TV.
