Detroit Is Halting Garbage Pickup, Police Patrols In 20% Of City: Expect Bankruptcy In 2011
The Business Insider ^ | 12/13/2010 | Mike "Mish" Shedlock

Detroit has been bankrupt for years. It simply refuses to admit it. Detroit's schools are bankrupt as well. A mere 25% of students graduate from high school.

Yet, in spite of hints and threats from mayors and budget commissions, and in spite of common sense talk of bankruptcy, Detroit has not pulled the bankruptcy trigger.

In a futile attempt to stave off the inevitable one last time, Mayor Bing's latest plan is to cutoff city services including road repairs, police patrols, street lights, and garbage collection in 20% of Detroit. Bing to Cede 20% of Detroit to Gangs and Homeless City officials suggest this will not shrink the size of the city. Perhaps it won't shrink Detroit on Google Maps. However, Bing's plan would effectively surrender 20% of the city to gangs and the homeless.

Would you want to live in one of the gang war-zones that his plan would create? Would you want to live in a bordering neighborhood or in a bordering city?

Regardless of your answer, Bing's plan cannot and will not work and I believe Detroit will, sometime in 2011, file for bankruptcy. If so, expect massive turmoil in municipal bonds.

Abandonment is actually what is happening. S A slow abandonment.

There are some videos of the old train station in Detroit from the era when passenger trains were a big deal. I guess this place was like a huge palace back in the day.

It is huge. People sneak in and explore. It looks like that girl “Kid of Speed” who did photos of the area in Chernobyl.

Detroit has all these abandoned office buildings downtown. One video has people going through them. One was an office for a stock brokerage firm and it looks like in the early 1970s they just closed one day and left everything there. Just like Chernobyl - people one day just fled.

Very very creepy.

“...Mayor Bing’s latest plan is to cutoff city services including road repairs, police patrols, street lights, and garbage collection in 20% of Detroit.”

Will they cut the workforce by 20% as well? Or is the precious public unions funding re-election campaigns too much of a risk? What about city “leaders” - what’s their paycut going to be?

is the area controlled primarily by one political party?

Detroit is 12.3% White. That should answer your question.

...rats. And forever. They’ll never stop voting them in. Going broke won’t keep them from re-election.

I think the only time any whites are in downtown Detroit is for a Red Wings game at The Joe.

What a sad state of affairs I saw a video a short time ago where one elderly lady lives alone in the neighborhood, all the other houses are abandoned and wrecked she is so worried and say’s if I call for help who will hear me? It reminds me of the beginning of an apocalypse. It seems many other cities are on the same road.

Indeed.

It also provides a much more accurate assessment of the problem.

Dave Bing isn’t exactly the union’s best friend. He’s fired a considerable number of them and refuses to deduct union dues from the paychecks of some city workers.

He’s a true democrat but he’s probably the best one elected in Detroit in a long time.

This is the end result of liberal one-party state rule. No one was left to fleece in the welfare state Ponzi scheme and so it broke down.

So offer it up to be sold, as would any business. Maybe the Saudi’s might buy it’s obligations? I’m sure private investors would be interested in buying their own small country, formerly known as “Detroit”. Bankruptcy will also require a name change. Instead of just selling stadium venue name rights, sell the whole damn city with real title.

There ought to be a movie about this.

Oh, that’s right, they already made Escape From New York.

“Let OCP take it private.”

LOL! Post of the day! What is so unreal is the Dutch director’s view of Detroit for Robocop is coming true. Oddly there is no creepy corporation like OCP who is dumb enough to try to take over Detroit. In Robocop - they actually had some jobs and something of an economy.

Robocop was pure fantasy not because of robots but because the populace of Detroit in the movie was still somewhat caucasian.

***Detroit in RUINS!***

Fort Detroit has fallen! Too bad Chief Pontiac did not live long enough to see it.

I don’t wish it on the people there, but if it happens it will be an interesting mini-experiment to see what happens, considering rest of this country could go the same direction very soon.
