While I agree that Kate is a bit of a prima donna, I think she is playing a “role” here - as set forth by TLC.

Given that the father has left the family this was an unconscionable thing to say to the little ones.
Truthfully, I think Kate was being pretty game for the majority of the episode—it was the freezing, raining, bug-filled, wilderness full of dangerous bears that got her to whining—can’t say that I wouldn’t have done the same thing if I’d never been camping before! And you have to give her *some* credit, she shot the darn rifle, pretty good, too, it seemed to me.
