Prince George's corruption: how it functions and why it persists

As federal prosecutors and a new county executive start trying to clean up corrupt practices that plague Prince George's government and politics, I thought I'd take a step back and look at how the illicit culture functions and why it persists.
To do so, I consulted a half-dozen veteran Prince George's civic players. None would speak for the record, because the matter is so sensitive and public comment could cost them professional associates, clients or even friends. So you'll have to take it from me that the group represents decades of experience in the fields of government, politics, business and law.
Also, since many Prince George's residents believe the media is out to sully their image, I want to stress that I'm not doing this out of malice. I and the people I interviewed want to shine a light on the ailment in order to help cure it.
The mission is to help County Executive Rushern Baker fulfill his goal, described in his inauguration speech Monday, of making Prince George's "first in integrity" in the Washington region.

A little bit of a cloud? The county executive is wearing a GPS detention ankle bracelet; the FBI is holding his passport; his wife (a new council member and an alleged co-conspirator) can't vote in committee; their police bodyguard is in jail for manslaughter; a former school superintendent is in jail for kickbacks; a state senator's bribery trial is pending; three county cops are under arrest on drug, gun and smuggling charges; the county is being sued by a landlord who says his county lease depended on paying off a host of local officials, and the county executive's arrest made TV news around the world, including China!
Also, PG now has the state's worst schools, most foreclosures and greatest number of carjackings. It's second, behind Baltimore, in crime and murders with widespread police exam cheating, and its school board was so dysfunctional in 2002 that the state dissolved it!
Sounds like Detroit
It is liberal blacks who have bought into the lie that something was stolen from them by whites long before they were even born, therefore it is okay to get into office and steal it back.
They railroaded a white police officer into Federal prison for ten years for being convicted (in a second trial) of loosing her dog on an illegal alien Central American suspect — five years before her indictment. (One day before the statute of limitations would have lapsed.) The fellow who was bitten had been deported, and was brought back to testify in both trials. He had never even filed a complaint.
Sharon Moore is now serving her seventh year!
Talk about reverse racism!
It's a PG thing ~ not a "black thing".
Back during WWII the PG county government officials (not the government, but the guys who were on the county board etc.) OWNED the slot machines in the DC area.
Maybe it's gotten better eh!
Talk about setting the bar pretty low. Not much of a goal...
Wow Rockford Illinois doesn’t sound so bad.
Forty years ago PG County was a much better place.
It was even somewhat conservative and Republican.
The problems started when the Democrats gained control of the most of state and whites started moving out of PG county due the crime war waged against them by blacks moving in from Washington DC. How do I know this? I was there and witnessed it.
Sounds like Boston.
It was called "Block Busting" and it worked very effectively in my childhood neighborhood in Seat Pleasant. Sharp realtors would pay a premium for a house in a white neighborhood and flip it for cheap to a black family starting the exodus. Those whites worried about the coming wave of "new" residents couldn't sell fast enough at bargain prices. Hello Waldorf, Silver Spring, Dunkirk.
My understanding was that pre-1950 Prince Georges was a good old boy corrupt white southern style Democrat county.
Then as the federal government expanded and newcomers arrived in the county, they turned to the Republicans as the party of reform.
Then after a Republican era into the 70’s, the racial migration from Washington turned the county black, Democrat and corrupt again.
I’m sad to see this. I once lived in PG County; but I was just 11 when we moved out west to UT. You’re right about it being somewhat conservative. I didn’t know too much about those things then. But looking back, I remember even many Dems. were more conservative then!
In fact, a lot of the kids in the neighborhood wanted Johnson for their president! However, this was a neighborhood where the parents wouldn’t let their kids go to a Beatles concert unless they apologized for the comment regarding “the Beatles being more popular than Jesus” comment! This was about 43-45 years ago.

Oakland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Miami...the “White Flight” of the 1950-60-70’s and LBJ’s War on Poverty were a deadly mix.
“...therefore it is okay to get into office and steal it back.”
...or perhaps just take from other people as they see fit on the streets. I love it when these punks encounter an armed law-abiding citizen.
Sounds like Detroit.
Sounds like Boston.
...Sounds like Trenton, Camden, Newark...
