State Rep. Allan Ritter, D-Nederland, is telling associates he will switch to the Republican Party next week. Ritter was not immediately available for comment. That would give the GOP a 100-member supermajority in the Legislature's lower chamber a number that allows them to pass constitutional amendments and other matters without seeking support from the Democrats.

There may be an excellent opportunity for Texas to use this situation to make a national impact.
Very soon, the Republicans in the US congress will be trying to pass the 28th Amendment to the US constitution. This would give the States the ability, with resolutions of 2/3rds of the States, to overturn onerous and improper federal law.
Since Texas will be able to complete its normal legislative business much faster than normal, plus the extra stuff they will want to do, they should turn their attention to both advocating for the passage of the 28th Amendment, and compiling a list of resolutions that can be proposed to other States to help put the federal government back in order.
Straus controlled which bills came up for a vote and when, and yes I hear rumors he did strong-arm some of them. He worked for the Democrats in the last session, he is loved by Planned Parenthood and others on the left. He did their bidding.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, I was waiting for this. This is one of the few cases where even a Rino can contribute. So the GOP will have a Quorum with or without the Left. Of course, now the GOP has no excuses not to do the right thing.
I’m still leery of any D that switches to R.
Here in NH, our house is 298-102 and the senate is 19-5 after being Dem majority for the last 4 years. Our Dem governor is now quite irrelevant. And I love it! I wouldn’t be surprised if we might flip a couple dems. Would be nice to have it an even 300 to 100.
(I’m one of the 298, BTW.)
The GOP in Texas still doesn’t have a super majority in the State Senate. Thus the by their rules the dems will still be able to influence things.
Good for you for being one of the 298. I have to relay that I got to shoot with the NH National Guard rifle team 3 years straight at the “Wilson Match” which is the national level match for all the state and US territory NG teams.
The NH team had some great shooters and were a fun bunch of guys to get squadded with.
BTW, thanks for Chip Kelly also...Maybe you can introduce a resolution to recognize his coaching prowess?
What we need in TX: constitutional amendments to confirm freedom to open carry, ban illegal immigrants, and ban gay marriage. Also nullify any federal law conflicting with State constitution. In fact we can just be a republic again and get rid of that problem.
i hope the (R) controlled legislature refuses to seat Miss Frizzy Head Howard. They can seat Dan Neil because of the ballot irregularities in our district.
The good thing is that they did it by running as Conservatives (most of them anyway).
J.S.
Yup, give them enough votes for redistricting and maybe get rid of some dims in Congress. I'd love to see lord dog nuts lose his next race.
No because not all Conservtives support your amendment, on the grounds taht it already exists in the 10th, and this amendment would weaken that!
J.S.
And were there ever irregularities...did you see the email Texas GOP sent out on 12/2 regarding what happened?
God Bless ya! I have worked in NH for a stint, and still have a few friends there. Try overturning the gay-marriage law. And passing Mr. Itse’s sovereignty Amendment.
J.S.
So, what’s on the menu?
Generally agree, but, IIRC, Ronald Reagan was a democrat early in his life.
After GHW Bush (senior) I no longer consider myself a republican. I seldom vote FOR republicans, however, I ALWAYS vote against democrats.
Texans, sign this and call your State Rep. There are Tea Party protests going on to "oust Straus." He is a RINO.
In Georgia two black Dem legislators just switched to the GOP, saying the GA Dems are ‘too liberal’.
I think you’ll see quite a lot of that kind of stuff happening, Dude. I have not yet made Mr. Itse’s acquaintance but I will soon. I’m just one of the many “freshmen”. Almost half of us are there for the first time.
Tailback, are those matches held at Camp Robinson, Ark? I was there for schools twice, in ‘83 and ‘87. My Guard time ended in ‘92.
Yes. Even most of our Democrats are fairly conservative and would be considered gun- and bible-clinging right wingers in most other states.
