Stop worrying about when the hard drive in your computer will die. Google wants to kill it permanently anyway.
The new Google Chrome operating system, which was unveiled Tuesday, as well as hints and suggestions from Apple and Microsoft, offers us a preview of the PC of the future. And it will come without that familiar whirring disk that has been the data heart of the PC for the past 25 years.
The Chrome OS will at first be available on all-black laptops from Samsung and Acer. And because the new platform stores everything -- files, applications, data bits and bytes, literally everything -- on online servers rather than on your home or office PC, those new PCs running it won't require gobs of storage. In fact, they won't require any storage at all.
The new Google laptops come without hard drives, in other words.

And what's to stop our government from subpoenaing anything they want from any of these online backups? Think "suspicion". Think "Janet Incompetano."
What privacy?
I remember buying a 20MB drive for $400 over 25 years ago, and my boss being pissed because he spent that much the year before for a 5mb hd (not much bigger than a floppy disk). Hard drives are a pain to keep up with.
Regardless, I like keeping my data at home under my thumb.
Most of you complaining already pretty much have your foot through the cloud door. If you depend on FR to keep your cookies or Netflix to keep your records. If you look to see where your order is on Amazon or to see who’s your newest friend on Facebook you’re already in the cloud.
If you want to buy a hard drive I’m sure you’ll be able too. But most of you are complaining about a technology you’ve already taken into your home and embraced.

There are not all that many rational people left. I suspect this will be a hit, depending on the price point.

Maybe the point is:
1) they keep backups
2) your laptop needs less power
3) dropping your laptop or getting it stolen does not mean the loss of your data
4) your laptop is lighter
Good idea... I had a blown computer and I worry whether all my data is kaput. By backing it all up into the cloud, if the hardware dies, the data is safe. Why, Rush pushes Carbonite. Its not a new thing but “cloud computing” is the computer of the future.
I can see an opportunity here for a smart and “radical” computer maker here...
The ad for such a computer would tout feature such as:
- comes with it’s own local computer storage that can store all of your files and your own copies of your selected programs, including music files, documents, images/photos, etc.
- you own your own data
- no giving up of your data to the “cloud” service providers
- local computing for when the cloud becomes “unavailable”

It doesn't need to be hacked, it is all on their machines. Combine that with people blabbing about pesonal details on Facebook, and the government putting all your health care records online, and no one will have any privacy.

This new system makes it convenient for government busybodies to present a supboena to scan the google servers at their whim whenever they want to go on a fishing expedition. I can’t imagine any consumer buying into this kooky idea when hard drives are so cheap.
Yes you do... or even a USB thumb drive. But what if you don’t have them with you, like when you’re on the road? Then I can see pulling it down from the “cloud” cuz you can connect to your data no matter where you are.
And you'll finally get to see a picture of me. In the government supported newspapers. Don't expect me to be wearing teeth, glasses, hair tie or shoes.
I figure the last part is a pretty safe bet, based on history from the last 2 years. ;)

Just stay away from Google. I never use any of there stuff and haven’t for years and even then it was for a search or two.
BTW, just picked up a 1TB EHD for $55
where can i get a free one? i’m not a blogger
