Senate's top Dems vow vote on DREAM Act later this month

The Senate's top Democrats sought to reassure supporters on Thursday that a key immigration bill wasn't dead this year.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said they would move later in December to pass a version of the DREAM Act that had been passed by the House on Wednesday night, ending speculation that lawmakers wouldn't act to pass the immigration bill at all this year.

"[T]he Senate will move to the House-passed version of the bill later this month," the pair said Thursday in a statement. "In the meantime, we will work with House leaders and the Administration to ensure that the DREAM Act will be law by the end of the year."

The pair's statement came after the Senate voted on Thursday morning to set aside its own version of the legislation, fueling speculation that the Senate might not act on the bill at all for the remainder of the lame-duck Congress, which would have effectively killed the bill.

The House passed the DREAM Act, which provides a pathway to citizenship under certain conditions for immigrants who had been brought to the U.S. illegally as children, in a 216-198 vote on Wednesday night.

The legislation faces many more hurdles in the Senate, where many Republicans and some centrist Democrats have threatened to vote down the measure.

Reid and Durbin said the measure was much more than a "symbolic vote" that lawmakers sometime take.

"The DREAM Act is not a symbolic vote. We owe it to the young men and women whose lives will be affected by this bill, and to the country which needs their service in the military and their skills in building our economy, to honestly address this issue," they said. "Members on both sides of the aisle need to ask themselves if we can afford to say to these talented young men and women there is no place in America for you.”

The battle is not the final vote, but cloture. If it passes cloture then it’s a simple majority vote.

Tell your Senators to vote NO ON CLOTURE!!!!

If they vote yes on cloture, then vote no on the final bill, that’s just playing both sides of the fence and splitting hairs.

No doubt. When are they due to leave town? I think they would even put off their plans to get out of town just to ram this through!

The Senate Dems under Harry Reid are just like Admiral Isoroko Yamamoto of the Japanese Imperial Navy.

Trying to find the best possible time in DECEMBER when the most Americans are asleep at the wheel and off guard to ATTACK.

This is dagger into the heart of the Statue of Liberty, our Nation of Laws.

Expect the Dreamnesty illegal alien Senate vote at something like 3 a.m. on Christmas eve morning, I would think the elitist, out of touch bastards are that low and contemptuous of the massive opinion of the American People on this Amnesty issue.

We may have to tie up their phone lines, flood their offices on the Hill and in districts in person, in short, have a repeat of the TOWN HALL PHENOMENON which swept the nation last summer.

Problem is, December being what it is, this is a difficult proposition. And the enemy knows it PRECISELY. I hope our side has some potent counterstrategies, and some people might have to give up their Christmas holidays as a result, or spend a little less on Christmas gifts and send a donation online quickly to some of the good anti-Illegal Alien lobbying groups on the front line in this battle.

Well, perhaps we can win it if enough Republicans BOTHER to show up and vote. :( If they’d done at least that much in the House, we wouldn’t be in this predicament.

“Hispanics who are eligible for racial preferences and affirmative action in college admissions in most states.“

Hey you. You pay out of state fees? You’re down list on quota admissions? An AA candidate beat you out on grants & scholarships or med/law/MBA/nursing/pharmacy/dental school? Your younger brothers & sisters gonna have some harder times attending?

Others you know just getting more ignorant and illiterate by the day?

Suckka! Your $100,000 college loan debts are funding MY superiority.

Save your $25/week, kids. All your lives. I’ll get it anyway.

Actually, Obamacare was passed in March of this year.
However I think you might be referring to one of the porkulus bills. But then again, maybe I am wrong on that.

We don’t owe d*ck to these Dreamidiots.

They owe US for all they’ve stolen from us over their lifetimes, all their parents have stolen.

Such hubris. I also am nauseated by the fact that many of them had seats at the vote in the Capitol last night.

Can you imagine if Americans just wandered into the legislative buildings of foreign countries, DEMANDING votes in their favor of laws they wanted to see passed . . .

We have been totally compromised as a sovereign nation.

Got "Zips in the Wire" as they would say in the 'Nam.

And that was the traitorous plan all along, after all.

I got this email from Ben Nelson from NE....seems he's feeling the heat from 2012. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Thank you for contacting me regarding the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act of 2010, S. 3992. I appreciate hearing from you on this matter. On December 9, 2010, the United States Senate held a vote on the motion to table (or stop) the motion to proceed to the DREAM Act. I voted in favor of this motion in order to prevent the DREAM Act from moving forward for debate. You will be pleased to know the motion to stop the DREAM Act from proceeding was agreed to by a vote of 59‑40. Additionally, I feel very strongly that Congress should not take a piecemeal approach to illegal immigration when America's border security needs to be our first priority. As such, I will oppose any further efforts to bring the DREAM Act up for a vote before Congress adjourns for the year. Thank you again for contacting me. The legislative process will only work with the input of concerned citizens such as yourself, and I encourage you to continue sharing your thoughts and ideas. Sincerely, Ben Nelson U.S. Senator
