WASHINGTON - A senior Marine general in Afghanistan on Tuesday declared the battle in the southern Taliban stronghold of Marjah "essentially over."
The declaration comes 10 months after thousands of U.S.-led NATO troops stormed the cluster of farming hamlets to oust the insurgents and cut off their income from the drug trade.
The campaign took longer than NATO officials had hoped, and underscored the complexity of trying to wrest control of an area where Taliban influence remained strong.
Maj. Gen. Richard Mills told reporters at the Pentagon on Tuesday the enemy has been pushed to the outskirts of the area, where insurgents come in from the desert to take "the odd shot at us." In the more populated areas, Mills said Afghan police are mostly providing the security on their own.

At this rate, we would have won World War II just around now.
America used to be like “Victory or death”
Then it was “Victory”
Then it was “Peace with Honor”
Then it was “battle essentially over” or something.
Looks like Carseye is eating good.
He usually disguises his weight by wearing a big hat.
Pokistan still off limits?
Count on the AP not to report who won. :)
You’re on a roll.
When women are allowed to sing karaoke in the Afghan, then we can declare victory!!
:’) Karaoke machines (hand cranked I guess) should have been in the first airlifts of relief supplies.
I am laughing at our treasonous media.
Had GWBush still be in office, this “battle” (a months long campaign) would have been one of the most frequently covered and analyzed stories, every week, since it started. Under Obama it has been a non-event in the media.
When the Marja campaign started, it was understood that it was just a preliminary step to the real target of the surge - Kandahar - which is huge compared to Marjah and still plagued with Taliban violence.
The length of time the Marjah part of the campaign has taken shows the Kandahar region very likely cannot be pacified before the surge numbers are supposed to be cut back, by Obama’s timetable.
The media would not be glossing over these events, for what they are not accomplishing, were it not the Obama admin.
Thanks. I’m in the dark. :’)
GWB should have done it right after 9/11 and asked congress to declare war on Afghanistan.
