Gays in the Military
National Review ^ | December 7, 2010 | Lt. Col. Oliver North

Posted on 12/07/2010 1:14:54 PM PST by JSDude1

Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made a startling statement in congressional testimony last week. When asked if allowing open homosexuals into the U.S. military would lead to a mass exodus of troops from active service, he boldly declared that they can “find another place to work.”

Such a cavalier response to a U.S. senator’s serious inquiry may play well in the press and in the current commander-in-chief’s office, but it illuminates a deeply misguided commitment to political correctness and foreshadows serious adverse consequences for our national security. If tens of thousands of troops now serving in the finest military force the world has ever known vote with their feet in the midst of a war, we’re all in deep trouble.

At issue is a pending vote in the Senate on repealing Section 654 of Title X of the U.S. Code. This law, on the books since 1993, states: “The presence in the armed forces of persons who demonstrate a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts would create an unacceptable risk to the high standards of morale, good order and discipline, and unit cohesion that are the essence of military capability.”

I can image all the disruptions this WILL really cause when it is repealed (we may never recover).

Mostly this will affect the ranks of noncoms and, in wartime, that will be disastrous.

Mike Mullen needs to find another place to work...like a bathhouse.

I was in the military; and, here is the argument I make:

The rewards of abolishing DADT don’t justify the disruption.

I estimate that less than a few dozen people would actually want to serve openly gay in the military (the vast majority of gays prefer not being outed in the military). So a very small number of activists and what not will get what they want.

On the other hand, it is a very disruptive notion. The military is an organization in which you can be imprisoned for affecting good order and discipline - so it is recognized as being important. I can’t imagine the disruption of having an openly gay man in my unit. Who’s his battle buddy, to share a tent with? What about those open showers in many training situations. At the National Training Center in CA, the was a latrine with around 50 toilets side by side, no dividers - how does that work? I was on a tank - we slept together in/on the tank. We used jugs of water to help each other bathe. The list of situations which would be uncomfartable for the hetero’s...and may end up in violence, is endless.

And why all this disruption? So a few dozen people can be loud and proud in uniform?

From Colonel North’s Article:

The report dismisses as a “short-term problem” the overwhelming moral and religious opposition expressed by military chaplains of every denomination. The SecDef’s “implementation plan” insists that “misperceptions” and “stereotypes” about living in close quarters with “openly gay service members” will be overcome by “revised standards of conduct” and “new regulations.” Yet he also wants to “legalize consensual sodomy,” prohibit “separate berthing, billeting or bathroom facilities based on sexual orientation,” and deny honorable discharges to those who have a conscientious objection to living with a homosexual. Try explaining all that to the God-fearing, church-going parents of a 17-year-old prospective recruit.

Its really about driving conservatives out of the military. When the gays and liberals are the only ones “defending” us, we’re in real trouble. But, then, that’s probably all part of the plan.

Well said. Thanks...FYI..a few weeks ago, on The Military Channel, I caught a superb documentary..”Restropo.” It follows an Airborne platoon on a 15 month deployment to an isolated OP in Afghanistan. it shows them living, sleeping, eating, dying together, in very close proximity...even scens of wrestling and group “mosh-pit” like dancing to blow off steam. Absolutly no way that an openly gay soldier in such a situation would NOT disrupt unit cohesion and morale. BTW..check their website for when they rerun it...every Congressman and Senator should have to watch this..

Note on the above link...this link will give you an error message on that site. You must go to the URL window and add )) to the link and it should open.

Another link to that site is the link below. Once on that site go to the paragraph which says..”In a report dictated apparently by Washington and copied out by his staff,...”

The word “report” is a link to the above page.

ADM Mullen is a great reason why the JCS and CJCS should always come from ground combat ranks - either Army combat arms, USMC, or USN/USAF special operations.

Liberals know that the military is a bastion of conservatism—almost by nature. It is one of the key mechanisms of Government they would luv to get their hands on. This is one way make many (not all) Conservatives self-exit. Many others will no doubt be hounded out for not being PC enough. Replace them with left-leaning services members and you’ve 1) hollowed out the armed forces, 2) let liberals put their “finger on the trigger” of weapons that can be used to suppress future dissent. A conservative army will not shoot citizens who want to reclaim their freedom—a liberal army might.

For a little background on the Mullen-North relationship...

They have known each other for more than 40-years. They were in the Academy class of '68, along with Dennis Blair, Charles Bolden (NASA) and Jim Webb (and my own brother). The class immediately before them had Pete Pace and Richard Armitage in it.

My guess is North has some insight into Mullen beyond what he articulates in this piece. North also has the Combat Action Ribbon with two stars (at least), where Mullen doesn't own wear it at all.
