A report released on Monday revealed that wait times for availing treatment in Canada have surged 18.2 weeks in 2010. This is for the first time that an increase has been experienced in waiting times in the country since 2007.
The report `Waiting Your Turn: Wait Times for Health Care in Canada' by the Fraser Institute brought out that the average waiting time in B. C. rose to 18.8 weeks from 17 weeks in 2009.
Mark Rovere, the Fraser Institute's Associate Director of health policy and co-author of the report said, "We're seeing continued government rationing, which is leading to longer wait times. Our current system is leaving Canadians without timely access to treatment". He added that the waiting time had increased by three weeks than as though justified by doctors.

I doubt very much that politicians and their families..or ranking govt employees wait for surgery. The rich go to the US..
I know that is correct. Hospitals in the northern tier of states treat lots of Canadians.

Yes, they do. But is it a system that has checks and balances through individual financial cost or through a one-size-fits-all bureaucratic nightmare. Also, governments tend to try to control costs by limiting the amount of reimbursement to doctors and hospitals, therefore the doctors often times are required to treat a patient at less than cost. Doctors then leave for greener pastures. Less doctors means longer wait times.
The three doctors who founded the private clinic I go to all came from Canada and they are horrified at the length of time between diagnosis and treatment, especially of cancers.
Sure cuts down on pension payouts.

Fraser Institute says, The Fraser Institute’s twentieth annual waiting list survey finds that province-wide wait times for surgical and other therapeutic treatments have increased in 2010. The total waiting time between referral from a general practitioner and delivery of elective treatment by a specialist, averaged across all 12 specialties and 10 provinces surveyed, has risen from 16.1 weeks in 2009 to 18.2 weeks in 2010.
Calgary Herald says: Albertans are waiting nearly a month longer than most other Canadians — an average of 22.1 weeks — for non-emergency surgery, according to a report released Monday by the Fraser Institute.

Cancer treatment isn’t elective , non-emergency or availing.
Well, here’s something to ponder. My Aunt is Sask waited 3.5 months for an (expletive) MRI which costs $50 here in Los Angeles. The relevant surgery needed required back in 2007 waiting time for her was 5 months. We were so PO’d we just paid for her to get treatment in Florida. Of course, what do I know..I’m originally from Vancouver.
A more telling statistic is to look at death rates for certain cancers in Canada compared to the US. Canadian rates for breast cancer deaths are higher than in the US as are those in the UK.
