Live Thread: Obama Statement on His Caving on Extending Bush Tax Rates (Apprx. 6 p.m. EST 12/06/10)

Obama will be speaking to the nation shortly to put the best spin on his caving in to the Republicans on extending the Bush tax rates. The cable networks are standing by to cover it live.

Here's a teaser from CNN on the deal:

President Barack Obama presented congressional Democratic leaders Monday with a proposed deal with Republicans that would extend Bush-era tax cuts for two years and unemployment benefits for 13 months while also setting the estate tax at 35% for two years on inheritances worth more than $5 million, a senior Democratic source told CNN.

The deal also includes a temporary 2% reduction in the payroll tax to replace Obama's "making work pay" tax credit from the 2009 economic stimulus package for lower-income Americans, the senior Democratic source said. As currently crafted, the deal would prohibit amendments by either party, according to the source, who spoke on condition of not being identified by name.

According to the senior Democratic source, Obama and Biden told the congressional Democrats that the proposed deal was the best they could expect.

ROTFLOL.

Too late, Marxist.

I’ll give him this, he has nerve. He lies with ease.

Thirteen more months of UI

I noticed they stopped counting it by weeks. I guess saying they are extending it another 56 weeks isn't as friendly for TV broadcasts, nor is saying we are paying for people to stay on unemployment 155 weeks.. 13 is such a 'cleaner' number to hypnotize the masses with.

This is the best deal we're going to get considering the Democrats have the presidency and huge majorities in the House and the Senate.

If we wait until after January 5 to make a deal it would cause great harm to the economy.

I agree. You work like a crazy person, pay taxes on what you earn, save and invest the rest (on which you pay taxes for any earnings) and you can’t even leave it to your kids without the government getting over a third. Lots of folks say that $5 million is more than anyone deserves, thus tax it. But for many small family businesses and farms, it’s not necessarily that much if most of your assets are in land, equipment and goodwill to keep your operation going.

And is he guaranteeing that the Rats will vote for this thing?

Extending UI was inevitable. The private sector has to be assured that the country is worth investing in and make a tangible move to create jobs. I have no idea how that’s done, I’ll leave that to people who actually know how.
Death Tax is crap. The estate has already been taxed and the heirs should receive what is bestowed to them.
2012 will either support the peoples’ movement or see them with their tails between their legs(again)
