Live Thread: Obama Statement on His Caving on Extending Bush Tax Rates (Apprx. 6 p.m. EST 12/06/10)

Obama will be speaking to the nation shortly to put the best spin on his caving in to the Republicans on extending the Bush tax rates. The cable networks are standing by to cover it live.

Here's a teaser from CNN on the deal:

President Barack Obama presented congressional Democratic leaders Monday with a proposed deal with Republicans that would extend Bush-era tax cuts for two years and unemployment benefits for 13 months while also setting the estate tax at 35% for two years on inheritances worth more than $5 million, a senior Democratic source told CNN.

The deal also includes a temporary 2% reduction in the payroll tax to replace Obama's "making work pay" tax credit from the 2009 economic stimulus package for lower-income Americans, the senior Democratic source said. As currently crafted, the deal would prohibit amendments by either party, according to the source, who spoke on condition of not being identified by name.

According to the senior Democratic source, Obama and Biden told the congressional Democrats that the proposed deal was the best they could expect.

He’s all set to govern by E. O.’s and that might get him a challenge to the SCOTUS.

employers are going to have a 4% (2 for the worker, 2 for the employer) payroll holiday.

Are you sure about the employer part? I really hope you're right, but I heard differently (employee payroll deduction only), which would do absolutely nothing to stimulate business growth.

"This corrupt bastard was in full attack mode against the Republicans. It was disgusting... every damn word of it"

That was my take as well

“Two years is the worst possible outcome...even worse than letting the taxes go up for everybody.”

Candidates for 2012 elections from President down will need to take a position.

I sorta like two years.

(We have a spending problem, which is NOT yet being addressed.)

“Bipartisan agreement reached.”

Sounded like it was a FRAMEWORK for a deal, not necessarily an agreement — yet.

Republicans are idiots. They craft a "deal" with the President, but he's the one announcing it so it gives the impression it's his deal, and he was the one to compromise. Why weren't the leaders in the house and senate beside him as he was speaking? Why aren't the Republicans out there right now speaking about this, getting their side out? Shameful.

I hope they shoot this down.

Obama was angry and partisan. While the Reps in Congress may think that this was a victory, I think they gave away the store. The more we find out about this “compromise,” I think the more we [conservatives] will be unhappy with it.

Did you hear Rush today talking about WikiLeaks? Just golden. He was talking about why Assange hasn’t leaked documents relating to these other conspiracies, ah fantasies, that the lefties die by, like:

- where are the docs that show Bush lied about WMD in Irag to justify going to war
- where are the docs showing that 9/11 was an inside job by our government

and

-Obama’s birth certificate!

The water I believe is just starting to boil. Obama Fail.

Where does the House fit in the “deal”?

I can't say at this time.

Right now, Boehner and the new House look good, but they will have to slash the debt and they will by defuding obamacare everywhere possible.

These measures will also make the ecomony better, so that helps obama - but it's up to the Republicans to TAKE ALL THE CREDIT!

I wonder if the “payroll tax” holiday applies to those who pay their own SS tax. That would mean four percent? It’s confusing because of the euphemistic nature of the term “payroll tax.” Maybe it only applies to employers.
