Lieberman wants Senate to stay in session until it repeals 'Don't ask' policy

“Sen. Lieberman believes that there are at least 60 votes to repeal ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ this year, provided that leadership allows time for sufficient debate and amendments," Lieberman spokeswoman Erika Masonhall said. "Wanting to go home is not an acceptable excuse for failing to pass a bill that provides essential support for our troops and veterans and failing to take action that the president, the secretary of Defense and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff have called for.”

The senator also appeared to endorse Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart's demand that the Senate stay in session in a tweet on Monday.

Democrats appear to have the 60 votes necessary to overcome any GOP-led filibuster of the defense bill, because some Republicans — like Sens. Susan Collins (Maine) and Scott Brown (Mass.) — have said they support the repeal.

But all 42 GOP senators have vowed to block any legislation from moving forward until the Senate passes an extension of expiring Bush-era tax cuts for all income brackets. Even the Republicans who favor repealing "Don't ask, don't tell" have made clear they won't allow the defense bill to move forward until tax cuts are addressed.

That puts Democrats up against a tight legislative calendar. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said on Saturday that he hopes to finish work by Dec. 17 and avoid working up until the Christmas holiday, as the Senate had done last year.

But Democrats face a busy schedule in which they hope to handle other controversial pieces of legislation, such as the DREAM Act. Republicans have meanwhile demanded weeks to debate the defense bill, a timeline that would seem to kick the legislation — and with it, the repeal of "Don't ask, don't tell" — until next year.

At that point, new senators will have been sworn in, giving the GOP control of 47 seats and making passing a defense bill including a repeal of the policy difficult, if not impossible.

This is too damn much to ask of young straight men and women.

...or their parents. What parent would support their child entering a military where they could be victimized by sexual perverts?

Republicans in Connecticut ought to put up their own Senate candidate in 2012 and not hitch their wagon to this “maverick”. Good riddance to unreliable “friends”. Lieberman should be 2 years and out..

Would you be flabbergasted if you were to learn that Lieberman was gay?

You’ve both made excellent, valid points and I am at a loss to explain the drive that’s pushing some military poo-bah’s to get in the forefront of this unconsionable change in our military, which is NOT supposed to be about social experiments.

Are Mullins, Gates and the CG admiral brown nosers or closeted homosexuals themselves? Mullins smugly told McCain and others he knew of homosexuals he severed with -— how wonderful! - and that they were mighty fine sailors -— again, how wonderful!

What are the our brave troops to do in the line of fire when they’re serving with homosexuals all bloodied-up and he is HIV positive? Or are the Armed Forces supposed to incur more expense by testing the blood of the homosexuals once a month “against their CIVIL rights”?

Possibly. I am so furious.

If this damn lameduck votes on DADT before it’s adjourned.....

Even the AF is against it. Only the brown-nosing Mullins and Gates sell-out's are for this along with the Coast Guard.

Unfortunately, the Chief of Naval Operations has sold his soul for repeal of DADT.

Thanks very much. I knew there was another, but I didn’t catch his name. so I omitted him. Navy, right along with Mullins. And they think women and pregnancies problematic? Sheeesh. Wait until the homosexuals and their openly homosexual queens go at it.

Hello Onyx, these Senators are something else. My goodness. God forbid they might have to work until the Christmas Holiday......shivers. That is so pathetic and I can’t believe that the American public stands for this. They want to be done work before 17 December? Really????? Most folks get 24th off this year (if they are lucky). Obviously on the topic of the agenda, I am glad that they will run out of time, but it just makes me so angry when they whine about losing some of their vacations. UGH!!!!

There can be only one reason he knew them, he knew them, else why did he not obey his oath?

“...All libs are phoneys - even RINOs and “Blue Dog” Democrats...”

A socialist...is a socialist...is a socialist.

Anyone who thinks these bastards can be trusted is naive, misguided, and incredibly stupid.

Their allegiance is not to the U.S. - their allegiance is to something other and incredibly subversive.

The sooner we realize this and treat this as the war that it is, the sooner we can start taking our country back.

That he spoke at the Republican convention means nothing. At the end of the day, he’s one of “them”, and always will be.

Right. I agree with you on both counts, but want this lameduck to adjourn. They have no business voting on important issues that can wait for the next congress, and DADT is most certainly one of those issues that MUST wait.

The START Treaty is another one that MUST wait.

“Would you be flabbergasted if you were to learn that Lieberman was gay?”

Yes, it would. I doubt that is his motivation. Lieberman was one of the very few in the Democratic party that on rare occasions actually acted like he had a brain.

His stance on Homosexuals in the military is baffling to me. Why is he suddenly swinging to the hard left? Is he afraid he will lose another primary like he did last time and have to run as an independent again? So, is this real or just postering to applease the left wing of his party and its base in his home state?
