The Federal government said it was a problem (it was) but there were remedies that responsible firms and government agencies could employ to address the issue and avoid disaster (they did.) They said it would be expensive to address and it was.

WND said that the solutions were a waste of time - the problem was insolvable, civilization was absolutely going to collapse at the stroke of midnight, cities would panic, food riots would ensue, the government would be rounding up citizens for internment and gunning down resisters. Clinton would declare martial law and cancel the elections. Millions would be killed or die of starvation, not just in the US, but globally.

It was all complete nonsense, but they had people all over the internet in a panic and screaming at everybody who wasn't panicking that they were dupes who trusted the government and they would likely die a few months into the year 2000.

They are a hysterical nutjob site, and have been for a long time.

That doesn't prove there was no missle of course, but citing them as a reliable source makes one look silly.

Do you have the WND link to validate what you are saying?

At any rate, at that time I did not know about WND.

.
That is a flat out lie.

WND reported the opinions of those on all sides of it, and mostly indicated that it should be of no concern to anyone using a PC. They actually ridiculed Gary North for his alarmism.

Michael Galutia, who was an early Freeper, posted constantly for almost three years with alarmist predictions here, and constantly criticised WND and Newsmax for not taking the issue seriously enough.

I was doing llots of consulting for small manufacturing companies right before Y2K. When they asked me (in a panicked voice( what they should do, I would pull out a nice new pencil and tell them:

"You should already have a printout of anything you can't afford to lose -- and give every employee one of these and a "Big Chief" tablet; I guarantee they will still work"... ;-)
