WikiLeaks' Assange will release encrypted 'doomsday file' if arrested
NY Post ^ | 12/5/10 | NEWSCORE

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has circulated across the internet an encrypted “poison pill” cache of uncensored documents suspected to include files on BP and Guantanamo Bay.

One of the files identified this weekend by The (London) Sunday Times — called the “insurance” file -- has been downloaded from the WikiLeaks website by tens of thousands of supporters, from America to Australia.

Assange warns that any government that tries to curtail his activities risks triggering a new deluge of state and commercial secrets.

The military papers on Guantanamo Bay, yet to be published, believed to have been supplied by Bradley Manning, who was arrested in May. Other documents that Assange is confirmed to possess include an aerial video of a US airstrike in Afghanistan that killed civilians, BP files and Bank of America documents.

One of the key files available for download -- named insurance.aes256 -- appears to be encrypted with a 256-digit key. Experts said last week it was virtually unbreakable.

Really?
Do you have some evidence for this?
If it is AES 256 then there is a 256-bit key which means 2^256 possible combinations; that's about 1.15792089 × 1077...

That number is so huge that if we divide it by the National Debt [~9,133 Bn] we get 1.267759583 × 1064!

Why? It is about time someone shows how utterly corrupt our Government is. From the fraud of the Climate, Financial System, and Perps of Terrorism; we know the truth.... Global Warming is a hoax. The Financial System is dead and needs to be returned to true Capitalism. Saudi Arabia and Iran are two countries that need to be exterminated..... Let the truth out; down with the facists.... and statists.....

When Bill and Hillary were in college and if they had a chance to release something like this about Vietnam, can anybody guess what they would have done?

At a minimum, Assange wants Obama to think he’s got info on Obama. Obama might have purged what he sent Assange, but you can never purge everything.

Will somebody explain to me why the big fuss over Assange? There are supposedly hundreds of thousands of documents in these files. What about all the people who have helped him get those files. I would think they are the real traitors for leaking the classified stuff from all the different agencies. It would take many, many people to do so yet nobody says anything about them.

Why?

Sounds like there are some people “very high up” helping Assange. And, I would not be surprised this is a “bi-partisan effort”. Assange is not getting all this from a low ranking serviceman, either

BO knows exactly what Assange has. BO is the source of all the Wikileaks.

By leaking State Department Cables, BO has made himself public enemy #1 of all Diplomats worldwide and subjected himself to a lawsuit to legally remove him from office directly before SCOTUS.

He is very lucky i am not at the helm because he would simply just disappear. He would be planted next to Jimmie Hoffa in the Everglades along with all of his associates too! Anyone that had any files would be too afraid to release anything. THIS IS ALL OBAMMA'S FAULT! WHERE IS THE PRESS? THIS IS ALL OBAMMA'S FAULT! !!!!!!!

Governments cannot function without certain levels of information security. Negotiations would become impossible, wars will result and with them, thousands if not hundreds of thousands of deaths -- not to mention economic chaos.

Non-tyrannical government cannot function without the trust/good-faith of its citizens; the US is rapidly running out of that currency and the 'default' there will mean the end of governance as we know it in the United States.

If instead of "trying to save face" the government would own up to what it's doing/said that would go a long way toward halting the bleeding-out of the people's trust; however, the government has taken to justifying all of its actions with "because I can". That attitude is exactly why Nancy Pelosi laughed when questioned on the Constitutionality of Obamacare. That attitude is exactly why the Supreme Court legalized larceny (Kelo v. New England). That attitude is exactly why the Executive branch violated the legal rights of GM bondholders. That attitude is exactly why LTC Col Lankin will be sacrificed in an unjust trial.

The Government has been sowing lawlessness for decades; now the harvest is coming in.

You won't get any argument from me. I'm with you brother.

Don't forget swine flu, mad cow disease, rain forest destroyed, acid rain, west nile virus, ozone depletion, killer bees, bird flu and I know there are plenty I'm missing.

This is why the Tea Party needs to stay uniform for the next election and vote more of the progressives out, rinos too.

We have to keep culling the heard. These positions are not careers and we have to let them know it.

Nah, I’d like to see the creep incarcerated wif a bunch of big ‘ol boys hyped up on Viagra... then get rid of the body.

Go ahead and call his bluff... he can’t have that much leverage. What is he going to tell about BP, that they had govt officials on the payroll or that Carol Browner was more interested in seeing the disaster continue than problem solve? Gee, who wouldn’t have seen that one coming?

Perhaps it is that there are some high-ranking officers who see what is happening to LTC Lankin and are trying to address the problem in a more roundabout way.

This isn’t something that can be broken with a modern computer.

But with tomorrow's computers that may already be in the hands of some governments today?

His ace in the hole is his threat to publicize the password, in effect, releasing the rest of the documents to the public.

But that's not in his control anymore. Every government with the resources to do it is going to go to work on them and probably decrypt them much sooner than most people think is possible. And there is nothing Julian Assange can do to stop it.

Just bump him off already and put him out of our misery.

“Ummmmm...pretty much we do NOT do that here. Why the heck would you ask us to be dishonest? Why? The truth is our currency”

Did you get that last line from someone named Nancy or anyone with a big D in front of their name?

I hope you were being sarcastic!

AES256 would take about 3 minutes on a real computer system.

Tell you what. I'll give you a sample and you decrypt it on your "real" machine in 3 minutes. Willing to bet $1000 that you can? I'll take the bet that you can't right now, and I haven't even got $1000 to bet.

I've worked in Defense. There's a reason AES256 is used for Top Secret material.

I don’t get this. Somebody wants this stuff out. We know what they can do when they don’t want something out (re: anything related to Barry).

How could encrypted files and non-encrypted all be stolen by one guy? One service man with access to everything? doubt it.

If that many people have them, then it will all come out anyway. Take him out now and let the chips (bytes) fall where they may.
