I don't understand your statement that “espionage is still one of the few internationally recognized capital crimes”?

For example France is under no obligation nor can they legally prosecute someone committing espionage against the UK or Belgium or us. The problem will Assange is he is NOT an American citizen he is an Australian citizen. He is under no obligation to protect any secrets other then Australian secrets and maybe even not then. (You have to sign secrecy agreements allowing you access to said secrets in which comes the obligation to protect them!)
Maybe receiving stolen goods is his crime?
Anyway Manning enabled Assange I do not understand the lack of focus of people here on FR on Manning. If the story is true he gave a terabyte of data to Assange and one page of text is 1 kilobyte (guessing here!) then look at number of pages passed to Assange by Manning. Terabyte =10^ 12 bytes, 1 kilobyte = 10^3 bytes, well 10^9 is a lot of pages!
It may not reach to the moon but I wouldn't want it to fall on me! Manning's actions don't require a conspiracy, modern IT technology can do with one dvd what an army of spies working decades can do. I don't understand why people here on FR are more focused on Manning and the lax security procedures that allowed him to bring digital recording technology into a secure facility. I understand the media's lack of interest in focusing on Manning because it endangers their DADT repeal dreams and calls to question as to whether allowing people with certain “life styles” classified access.

But if a French citizen is caught doing espionage against the USA, WE can kill him/her and France has no recourse.

Irrespective of the Mechanics of the espionage, Assange should be marked for elimination. An administration that truly cared about the USA would have already carried it out.

I still want to know how a private can waltz out with that much data and no one knew.

I can’t even walk out with plant blueprints on a DVD without HR knowing. How can he download and burn that much data?

Did someone feed it to him?
