This happened not too far from where I live. It just tears me up to hear about things like this happening. He serves in Iraq and comes home uninjured only to be hit and killed by a hit and run driver within days of his return. My heart goes out to his parents. He was only two years older than my daughters who both serve overseas. This story really got to me, maybe because both my daughters are traveling home in a few days and will be here within one day of each other.

Those SUVs are vicious as they drive around by themselves and kill innocent people!

I had a .45 like that. I saw it once in a news story being described as “dangerous”. Sure enough, every once in a while, if I startled it, it would leap from the table and viciously, well, pistol whip me about the head and face. Terrible.

I'm a retired serviceman. We have our share of stupid. Stupid is riding your bike at 2am in the morning.

I go to work at 5:30 in the morning. I have on several occasions narrowly missed idiots riding their bikes on the road. Aggravates the sh!t out of me. I wouldn't "hit-and-run" but that wouldn't make them any less dead.

Maybe it is an eye for an eye thing,

"The Lancair IV-P single-engine aircraft, which can be built from a kit, had lost its propeller and was "basically gliding" in for an emergency landing on the beach when it hit and instantly killed Jones, said Ed Allen, the coroner for Beaufort County. March, 2010

Huish's father said his son was on his way to a friend's house and was riding his bicycle on East Coast Drive with several other pilots in his squadron when he was struck.

His bad luck, I would say. It could have been any of them. And it sounds like a drunken driver. 2:00 am is a dangerous time to be out riding a bike, but I guess he wanted to stick with his friends.

With the cold attitudes being posted here, I’m regretting posting it. This was a young man, one of the men who this forum expresses admiration for, who volunteered to put his life on the line for his country, who was killed by a hit and run driver and there are jokes about the SUV and blathering about how it was his fault for being on a bike at 2 am. I don’t remember reading in the article where it said he was drunk or that he was riding down the middle of the street or that the police have found yet that it was his fault in any way.

Yes, I agree with you. I took my daughter to the ER at 3 a.m. the other night. I know nurses who work crazy shifts from 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. My ex is a surgeon who’d be out driving to the Children’s hospital for emergenices in the middle of the night. There are legitmate reasons to be out.

I don’t know what this guy was doing, or what the driver who hit him was up to. But, any loss of life is sad. I spent 6 years as a critical care nurse in several Level 1 trauma centers. People do stupid stuff & get themselves killed but it’s still awful for families & those who are left behind.

You can only be so safe when the streets are full of drunks, texting teenage girls, hot rodders and blue hairs. I won’t ride in the street anymore.

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

Don’t regret posting this. There are those of us out here who are saddened by this horrible accident and our hearts go out to the family of this young man. I thank him for his service to our country and will say extra prayers for him and his grieving family.
The perp who hit him and ran will be caught and I hope they throw the book at this scum. To hit someone and leave...well, it means he was probably running for a reason.
Nonetheless...the hero who was killed is now at peace. He IS the winner while the other will be hunted down and punished.

This is a sad story. But I wouldn’t ride a bike in any kind of traffic at any time of day with friends or alone. In even the mildest car-bike encounters, bikes and their riders are just too fragile and cars have too much mass and speed.

I hope they find the driver too. For someone to drive on is just unfathomable to me. Such a tragic end for an admirable young man. His parents are devastated. I can’t even imagine being in their shoes. I can only think that the driver had been drinking. It was reported that the vehicle sped through the intersection.
