Staffers for Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are circulating a bill to legalize poker playing on the Internet that's backed by large casino interests.

The Nevada casino companies pushing the measure were among the Democrat's biggest donors during his fierce re-election fight. They argue the bill would provide consumer protection for poker players and would provide some tax revenue for federal and state governments.

"On Wednesday, three Republican lawmakers sent a letter to Mr. Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) opposing any efforts to pass Internet poker legislation during the lame-duck session."

"Congress should not take advantage of the young, the weak and the vulnerable in the name of new revenues to cover more government spending," Rep. Spencer Bachus (R., Ala.), the ranking Republican member of the House Financial Services Committee and others wrote.

WTH! This is not about morality and you "taking care of the young, weak and vulnerable"! It's about FREEDOM! Who are these people that are so consumed with moralizing a game on the internet?!

Reid was AGAINST this until the casinos backed his re-election.

God help me when I agree with Reid the absolute scumbag on ANYTHING!

Legalize it and tax it...or get the hell out of the way! Forget your moralizing republicans! MILLIONS of Americans play poker on the internet and at the moment are left in a legal "gray" area. It's time to make it LEGAL!

I couldn’t care less about Internet poker, but in this case, I agree with you, BT. This is something they could legalize and tax, and people would pay to play.

Don’t worry about this.
There is NO WAY Reid would take money from Casino bosses or corrupt union officials.

He was elected.
And in Sean Penn’s book that’s all the proof you need that he’s an OK guy!

;-)

I couldn’t give a rats ass about internet gambling, but if Harry Reid wants it, I’m against it.

Poker in the rear.

Liquor in the front.

It is good to see a Democrat who is not beholden to special interests, big business or campaign cash.

I agree with you. I don’t play poker online but I do have an online horse racing account. I’m tired of the nannies on the right and left trying to regulate our lives.

Under normal circumstances, that would be my immediate response as well. These are not normal circumstances and the republicans are absolutely WRONG to be moralizing an internet game. Sometimes we have to move beyond our first gut reaction and this is one of those times.

I might add that in this day and age of NO JOBS, I already know a number of people who actually make their LIVING right now doing this.

“Don’t worry about this. There is NO WAY Reid would take money from Casino bosses or corrupt union officials.”

The casinos will offer their own poker websites.

Personally, I am against legalizing anything with the intent of taxing it. I am against raising any taxes on anybody. They all have the same result; less money in the hands of Americans and more money in the hands of government parasites. The more money they have, the more money they spend, the more power they have, and the more they interfere in my life! DEFUND DC!

I agree with you. The country is completely being destroyed by these socialists and there are alot more important things to be doing. DUH

However, please know that alot of people are supporting themselves right now and haven’t had to “suck at the teat”...and we’ve got republicans trying to “protect the weak and vulnerable”. Hell’s bells.

I agree with you too! The problem is that DC has been floundering around on this subject for years and has left the entire topic up for grabs. Is it legal...is it not?? They’ve made it ILlegal for credit card companies to put through any charges to poker websites and it’s crippling the game that people rely on. I’m po’ed at the whole thing!
