You change the direction of people by letting them go hungry until they work to earn their bread.

Until vertabrae are broken in full view of the upcoming generation, there can be no association of punishment with crime.
Case in point: the last public execution carried out in the county in which I live was done in 1903. It was 1926 before the NEXT murder was committed within the county, ie. one half generation passed before the next murder occurred.
The state then moved all capital punishment to Central Prison instead of allowing those sentences be executed in public before the residents of the area in which the crime was committed. What that has effected is no association with the crime to an execution done miles and years later.
That’s my opinion based upon the historical evidence.
