When I was stationed in Korea, we got a briefing on the rocket/artillery situation. Both sides have a ridiculous number pointed at each other...and the civilian population would be severely bloodied.

Seoul is about 25 miles from the border...as far as I know, outside antiquated Soviet rocket and artillery range...so they only have to worry if the Ruskies have given them cruise missiles (but they’re our friends, right :))

The ‘2-hour’ thing is a an exaggeration given the likelihood of accurate South Korean retaliation. While there is a likelihood of widespread casualties, the bigger threat is of panic. The only reason that the US and South Korea have hesitated to touch Pyeongyang since the 90s is that South Korea’s economy would be hit hard in the event of a limited war or even peaceful reunification.

North Korea is the nation level version of a suicide bomber. They could destroy Seoul, but would be wiped out as soon as the South counter attacked. Up to this point North Korea has survived simply because it isn't worth the pain necessary to wipe them out. But that point is rapidly approaching.

All of the scenarios of the war assume that the North starts it, and hence has a free first punch. And that is certainly the most likely since Obama completely lacks a spine.

Nobody to my knowledge has ever worked out a Six Day War style preemptive strike by the US, South Korea and Japan. If we went in hot with everything we have with wings and that can carry bombs. Decapitate the NK government and destroy their artillery near Seoul before anyone has a chance to pull a lanyard. Seoul would take damage, but nor as much as if we let NK hit us first.

As for NK's vaunted bunkers, MOAB them. There are hundreds of obsolete airliners and old transports parked out in the desert. Convert them into radio control drones. Each could carry enough cheap AMFO explosive to make each of them into a MOAB cruise missile. Send them into NK in one massive wave. It would overwhelm their 70's vintage air defense. And the B-2s would be clear to go after their nukes and command and control while everyone is distracted by the big flashes and bangs.

It is a desperation strategy. But the United States has been reduced to a desperate and bankrupt position by the successive incompetence of Clinton/Bush/Obama with regards to North Korea. China is coming up strong. And we can't wait for them to get here to do something about it. Hitting them hard with everything we have left before they get all their pieces in place may be the only chance we have for survival. NK is going to have a lot more trouble fighting in the middle of winter than we will. Frostbite and starvation will greatly increase the lethality of every bomb we drop. So if we are going to do this, the time is now. Annihilate the threat to Seoul and then offer happy meals for guns to the staving people of North Korea.
