The myth of Palin's frontrunner status
Washington Post ^ | December 1, 2010 | Jennifer Rubin

Much of the punditocracy is obsessed with Sarah Palin. It's understandable on several levels. First, she makes for good copy and has a knack for coining catchy phrases ("death panels") and new words ("refudiate" -- it's now in the dictionary). She is controversial and opinionated, so given the choice between, say, a story on John Thune and one on Palin, it's a no-brainer to choose the best-selling author, TV reality show star and Tea Party darling. But conservatives suspect there's also some mischief-making afoot -- the desire by liberal-leaning members of the media and the White House to make Palin the symbol of the Republican Party, which they are convinced will translate into her presidential run, her nomination and a shellacking for the GOP at the polls in 2012.

You don't have to buy into a conspiracy to see that many in the media and on the left are convinced Palin will be the nominee. In fact, they seem to be in a bit of a time warp. Howard Kurtz recently praised her media savvy, an observation widely held by conservatives -- 18 months ago. Unlike conservatives who have had time to process the Palin phenomenon, non-conservatives are just beginning to evaluate her as more than a punchline or an object of ridicule. They suspect conservatives are oblivious to her shortcomings. But that's simply wrong.

For months now the real story on the right has been the search for new presidential contenders. There is far more awareness than many in the media imagine among conservative activists, Tea Partyers included, of Palin's limited appeal to independent voters. Her backing of questionable...

--snip--

And now there's Mike Pence...

Pence, DeMint, Bolton, Bachmann, Hunter. Let’s get some conservative blood into this race.

"One of the traditional methods of imposing statism
or socialism on people has been by way of medicine..."

President Ronald Reagan

Death Panels imposed by Mitt Romney (ObamaCARE=RomneyCARE).

independents will follow. if we have a clear message of freedom and less government ruining our lives.

this is a “if you build it, they will come” situation.

Are they scared to death of her and trying to destroy her, or are they pushing her on us because they think she’ll lead to a “shelacking”? It can’t really be both, can it?

They're not scared of her at all. They dismiss her, rightly, as a lightweight. Palin is Obama's dream opponent.

What they're trying to do is make her appear stupid or scary to independents while at the same time endearing her to the GOP base. That way she first gets nominated and then shelacked in the general election.

So you are saying the Massachusetts legislature over rode Romney's healthcare veto?

Most of the bad parts, yes.

THE LEFT ARE SCARED SH*TLESS SHE’S GOING TO RUN!

You're delusional. The left would like nothing better than to see such a lightweight as Obama's opponent.

Karl Rove hates these guys. They are all against his and Sarah’s wet dream amnesty plan.

“It can’t really be both, can it?”

Actually it can. The term is “doublethink” (see Orwell’s 1984). Doublethink - holding two contradictory ideas in you head and believing both - is essential to be a modern day lib (aka socialist). I’ve made a long list of examples before, but just look at their confused view of Christianity (religion BAD) vs Islam (we must respect faiths) for a prime example.

Once someone gets used to contorting their mind into doublethink, it becomes habit.

So again, yes, it can be both.

No, but I think so called Romneycare is a bum rap.

I agree with you, but, unfortunatley, it's not a rap he can overcome. My hunch is he won't run, but instead work behind the scenes for someone else he likes, like Mitch Daniels.

Funny, that useless Hunter was the only reason there is any fencing on the border at all. You should be busy bitching at your beloved RINOs for killing the Hunter Fence which was to cover a very large swath of your state.

Rubin is a neocon who was a big Rudy supporter in the 2008 GOP primaries.

So much for her insightfulness.

So instead of admitting you might be wrong about Bolton, you give me this type of sissy, weak response?

We're not talking about Palin. We're talking about Bolton.

You're the one that is delusional.

The left does not get their long knives out for someone they want to see run.

No other potential candidate has their statements torn apart at a level even close to what Governor Palin's words are attacked both by the Left and the GOP Progessive Establishment.

Try paying attention.

Bolton says he holds Reagan’s view on abortion. I’ll take that over Palin’s.

Bolton says he’s FOR states deciding the gay marriage issue. Fine, a flaw, but one I’ll live with.

Bolton is pro-US sovereignty. Palin doesn’t understand the term, as witnessed by her begging Murkowski and co. to pass LOST.

Everyone has a few flaws. If Bolton comes out in favor or bailouts, amnesty, LOST and Title IX, I’ll dump him into the RINO category along with Palin.

Why risk her fame and her rock-star status by running and possibly losing?

The Elites just don't get the Palins. If they think Sarah's getting out of Alaska and running around the country has to do with fame and status, they are dead wrong. Sarah Palin believes she has a duty to her country. If not, she and Todd would be quite happy following Barbara Bush's advice and staying home and enjoying a good life. The inside-the-beltway crowd cannot fathom someone who isn't motivated to pursue power for the sake of having power.
