House GOP scuttles nutrition bill at center of first lady's anti-obesity drive By Russell Berman - 12/01/10 04:21 PM ET

House Republicans on Wednesday scuttled a Democratic bid to pass a child nutrition bill that’s at the center of first lady Michelle Obama’s anti-obesity agenda.

The $4.5 billion legislation, which has already been approved unanimously by the Senate, expands eligibility and funding for school lunch programs. Democrats had expected it to pass on Wednesday and be sent to President Obama for his signature, but Republicans used their last chance to amend the bill to offer a motion that would require criminal background checks for childcare workers and would have removed the federal mandate for paid meals in schools.

When Democrats saw that the poison-pill amendment was headed for passage, they pulled the bill off the floor, a Democratic aide said.

"I am disappointed Republicans chose to play politics with a bill that enjoys strong bipartisan support and would increase access to school meal programs, improve the standards of food provided, and help reduce childhood obesity,” Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) said. “The real purpose of this motion to recommit was to delay this bipartisan bill from being signed into law.”

“I am disappointed Republicans chose to play politics with a bill that enjoys strong bipartisan support...”

But you pulled the amended bill because it was GOING TO PASS!! That’s not playing politics, Hoyer?

Liberalism is a mental disease!

"democrats did NOT want criminal background checks for child care workers"

In most inner-city schools, criminal background checks on the "children" who would get the free food would probably result in them being found to be in school, with outstanding Warrants and/or multiple prior convictions/plea deals.

Same can be said for the voters there, too.

Another communists plot foiled. Many Americans are naive nitwits and cannot see that these do good free handouts are destroying our freedom. I always said that at least 1/2 of Americans are fools and 1/3 are hard committed socialists looking for nanny state to provide for them. The cost is the beginning of a dictatorship.

I read elsewhere that there was a proceedural problem with a Senate bill passed earlier. I think it may have been this one. As I understand it,.they added a tax provision to a bill from the House.

The Constitution requires revenue bills originate in the House. Whatever the House passed would have had to go back to the Senate to be approved before it went to 0bammy for signature

“Didn’t any of the senators up for election in two years learn anything?”

We have to get that f***ing RINO Lugar out in 12. That sob has voted with Obama dems on almost every bill and/or nominee presented to the Senate. He should be strung up by his neck until dead! Can you tell I hate that pos!

The procedural problem was with a food inspection bill - the House Dems sent it back via “blue slipping.”

Guess the children will still have a choice of what they want to eat, and not be forced by the Feds to eat just Purina Wookie Chow.

Stupid Democrats couldn’t pass their bill under a privileged rule that excluded amendments.

Kiss this turkey good-bye! Hopefully, its not coming up next year.
