Editor's note: Ed Rollins, a senior political contributor for CNN, is senior presidential fellow at the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University. He is a principal with the Dilenschneider Group, a global public relations firm. He was White House political director for President Ronald Reagan and chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
(CNN) -- The first date is over. Not much happened. President Obama and his new governing partners, the House and Senate Republicans, met at the White House along with the Democratic leaders and discussed the unsolvable issues between them.
Even though they made no decisions and both sides went their separate ways, they agreed to start negotiations on extending the tax cuts. That in itself is the beginning of a positive process. They actually talked to each other and talked of a plan for action.
As with real dating, both sides have to get along or nothing will happen. So maybe this situation has more in common with an arranged marriage.
The American voters are the substitute parents, and they want this marriage to work or at least to be civil. And we, the voters, hold the shotgun.

Oh, Ed is an old hand at this. He wrote a book "Bare Knuckles and Back Rooms" which was fairly entertaining. In it, he recites his experiences as an advisor to Huffington in his Senate race. That probably says he's looking for money, not fame.
He backed Huck in 2008 and I suspect he'll back Huck again if the stipend is sufficient. This was just a preemptory takeout shot at Sarah, IMHO.
I strongly prefer candidates who have been governors over those who have been in congress. It’s a very different experience and demands very different talents.
Interesting you should note my personal ‘animus’ since I have not engaged with you before, (at least not recently) so if you tracked my posts, I don’t think you will find me referring to anyone else as a ‘smart guy’ in a sarcastic manner. You post in generalities, never offering proof, -— just your lofty opinion, based on your own prejudicies against her. Tough for you. I have posted a recent Rasmussen poll, links to her documented accomplishments and a Harris poll from March of 1980 which showed Reagan trailing both Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter, but you can only deal in slurs and opinion.
Just like a sick, slick, lying lawyer. When you don’t have facts on your size... well you know, resort to anything and everything.
You’re easy. Big egos always are...lol.
Sarah Palin is too strong a woman for you. I see your problem with her!!!!
Why don’t you call me a liar again for quoting you. That was kinda fun.
That's just ridiculous. Pissant and I disagree with some frequency. He's never called me a moron, nor have I called him one.
Why must people who aren't as infatuated with Palin as you seem to be, always be labeled something so untoward?
When did she ever say she was Reagan? So why is that an issue, Charles?
I note once again you evaded the points made by Onyx and myself.
“You’ve just taken 6-7 paragraphs to try to explain to people posting on a conservative political forum, why she quit. How does that translate into a :15 campaign spot targeted to people who aren’t posting on conservative political chat boards? It doesn’t. But, “Sarah Palin quit the only state-wide job she ever had” sure does. And THAT’s the ad that’s going to run, ad nauseum.”
On the first episode of her TLC show, she said “About halfway up the rock, I did not know if I was going to be able to finish the task. But I didn’t want to quit. I didn’t want to quit in front of other people.”
No worries. It amuses me.
Palin isn’t a RINO; however, YOU are one.
And what’s this “we”, pissant? I wasn’t ever for McCain......as you very well know, unless you are suffering from terminal memory loss.
No candidate is “perfect”, yet the ones whom you always consider to be THE best of the best/want to run, have less chance of winning than I would have.
Anyone pimping amnesty is a RINO in my book.
I offer an opinion on a political opinion forum. Scandalous.
"Sarah Palin is too strong a woman for you. I see your problem with her!!!!"
Sure, that must be it.
Address the points made or go somewhere else.
LOL. And Reagan never went on Fox News either!!! LOL.
You mean combined? Ha ha, fair point.
So you backed OBAMA in the last election?
Or just thrilled how your CLINTON VOTES turned out.
Please, exactly HOW MANY OF YOUR FIRST CHOICE candidates have been president. My guess, it’s exactly the same as the Palinistas.... That’s makes YOU just as smart as the average Palinistas... :-) Pull your head out of Pissant’s rear end.
Right. Just what they hear or read from the lamestream.
Heh. :)
Yeah. I know what you meant.
I just wanted to point out that certain politicians (who remind me of O’Donnell) seem to be in this just for the money and fame.
(not gonna mention any names)
Anyway, I agree with what you said.
Cheers.
Well, if the shoe fits....
"Address the points made or go somewhere else."
Right.
