Editor's note: Ed Rollins, a senior political contributor for CNN, is senior presidential fellow at the Kalikow Center for the Study of the American Presidency at Hofstra University. He is a principal with the Dilenschneider Group, a global public relations firm. He was White House political director for President Ronald Reagan and chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee.
(CNN) -- The first date is over. Not much happened. President Obama and his new governing partners, the House and Senate Republicans, met at the White House along with the Democratic leaders and discussed the unsolvable issues between them.
Even though they made no decisions and both sides went their separate ways, they agreed to start negotiations on extending the tax cuts. That in itself is the beginning of a positive process. They actually talked to each other and talked of a plan for action.
As with real dating, both sides have to get along or nothing will happen. So maybe this situation has more in common with an arranged marriage.
The American voters are the substitute parents, and they want this marriage to work or at least to be civil. And we, the voters, hold the shotgun.

Very statesmanlike stuff, that. And not remotely like Reagan.
You post this crap day in and day out hoping in your small delusional mind that your great God in the flesh Duncan Hunter will resurrect his great political inability to beat "unsure" in a republican primary somewhere.
How did your brain become so vacuous?
Some are so easy because they’re so transparent.
I have determined that they’re two or three of msnbc’s 12 full time viewers. Har!
In 1957 Reagan was able write and give a speech like his Eureka College Commencement Address
Give that a read, FRiend.
Sarah Palin can't hold a candle to that sort of eloquence and depth.
He’s not running, to my knowledge. You know something I don’t?
********************************
Good point! Reagan NEVER used facebook or twitter!
I take exception to that. It should be "and", not "or".
Ignore anyone saying the hippies were bit in the arse.
It was quite the opposite...the leftwing hippies took over MSM/Hollywood/Academia/Gov Buracracy and the Judiciary, and they STILL own it all.
They did very well for themselves, and it sounds like you will too.
Because unlike our generation that ALLOWED the commie hippie takeover....you all know how to fight.
Please do not listen to the old guard, they/we have utterly FAILED in politics, and you have ZERO to learn from us.
Imho, many (if not most) of Sarah’s detractors know little about her.
I, for one, am happy that she is not another Reagan. Different times, different challenges. If nothing else, Palin has made all the right enemies (except for Juanito Loco who will turn on her come primary season).
He doesn’t wear underwear, he wears diapers.
And cries a lot, somebody needs to stick a bottle in this boys mouth.
While I can understand a liberal not agreeing with her politics, I cant phantom
The hate that pissant and goldstategop have for Palin. I dont even hate OBAMA as bad as they hate Palin.
Truely amazing.
No more Congress Critters for president; not a one of them have EVER been worth a pail of warm spit!
And waiting for that “GREAT WHITE HOPE CONSERVATIVE”, to rush in and beat Obama, sure worked out so well, the last time around. /s
We picked a RINO in 2008. Time to try a conservative. Not that 2008 RINO’s protege.
Reagan was out polled by Carter early on by 30%.
Reagan was also said to be "divisive", and stupid, and a warmonger, and heartless, etc. ad nauseum.
Truth be told, none of us, and especially you, know how this is going to shake out. There are races to be run, primaries to go through, and then we'll know who the nominee will be.
Bingo we have a winner! There is no doubt that the Vagina is pissant’s and goldstategop’s number one problem with Palin.
I am well aware that he was developing the seeds of his greatness during his years as host of General Electric Theater. How is it that you are unable to appreciate Sarah's accomplishments?
Your post to me...that my statement about her “took the cake.”
Perhaps I misinterpreted your meaning...please, help me out here. What exactly did you mean by that statement...”took the cake.’
I took it as an attempted refudiation of the true fact I had stated.
Was I wrong about your implication? If so, I apologize.
The floor is all yours...
Yeah, I know you're a moron who's mission in life seems to be to stay one.
Look at the title of this very thread. It seems rather self-evident, at least to me.
I couldn't disagree more.
She WILL be employed. Her "performance" will earn her speaking fees in the range of $2000-$5000.
If she simply does one Right to Life banquet or one Tea Party convention per week, she could make nearly as much as working a full time job as a US Senator.
And if she is lucky, she can get a weekend gig being a talking head guest on a cable news show. And if she starts getting pretty outlandish, Sarah Palin may be able to get her a reality show, where the big bucks will start rolling in.
So yes, she did guarantee that the Democrats will control the Delaware Senate seat for the next generation.
But I would not call her unemployed.
