General Motors says it will hire 1,000 engineers and researchers in Michigan during the next two years to work on the development of new electric vehicles. The car maker says its plans include vehicles ranging from hybrids to electric models with extended-range capability, such as the Chevrolet Volt that is to go on sale shortly.(Snip)We have to stay invested in this technology because were not sure where its going to go, he said.

The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
...we’re going to make a better vehicle that no one wants...
The stupidity continues.....
*requires 3000 “D” batteries (not included)
(what was Obama’s plan for Yucca Mountain again??)
Let’s call it what it really is...a coal-fired electric car (as coined by Rush).
I'll bid two cents.
When in blind alley, it good practice to put vehicle in reverse rather than keep pushing against brick wall.
Olde Nissanic Proverb
“The Volt’s MSRP will be $41,000”
“According to GM the Chevy Volt can travel between 25 to 50 miles”
Paying more for less, the American way?
Yet another reason for me to never buy a GM car.
Good for GM. Finally some hiring instead of lay offs. I hope this recession is officially over soon. Yes I know that they say it is over already but until companies start hiring it is still a recession. This is a great start. 1000 people lives will change beginning today.
You’ll forgive my asking, but how does hiring 1,000 people who will consume more wealth than they produce signal that the recession is over?
WTF?
We have to start somewhere and 1000 folks in Detroit will have jobs. Aren’t they one of the highest unemployment areas? I didn’t necessarily say that it is over but it certainly a start.
Yea...I never thought anyone would fall for another AM Pacer, Gremlin, or Edsel......just goes to show you can fool so many so easily....especially with a $7500 to $10,000 rebate extracted from the pockets of hard working American "TAX PAYERS"......
In Obama's America, yes.
Swell. That means that, what, 2 or 3 hundred Million Dollars a year will be spent on retaining political influence rather than pursuing sound engineering. If that were the ticket to affluence, Albania would have ruled the world.
American taxpayers have already paid for this folly, so why shouldn’t Government Motors have their electric party for the kooks?
The only way electric Cars will work properly is to incorporate “Beta-Voltaics” within them to provide a constant re-charging of the battery packs.
“Beta-Voltaics” is the use of light elements that are radioactive but only in the emission of beta particles, ie. Electrons. Lightweight and benign elements like sulfur, and stable compounts containing one or more beta emitting atoms in a stable salt. Beta particles cannot be used to “breed” nuclear fuel and are stopped by a thin layer of tin foil. Of course in use of cars they would probably be housed in a crash resistant aluminum case. A “Beta-cell” the size of a small suitcase could be used to power an electric car for several years before needing replaced.
The Beta-Cell would constantly re-charcge the electric car’s batteries, signifigantly extending the range of the car or extending the range indefinately. Think driving the car coast to coast without needing to stop for a re-charge of stopping to let the batteries be re-charged by the beta cell.....
This is the type of car you would plug into the wall outlet to FEED the electric grid and lower your electricity bill rather than using coal plant electricity to power it....
Of course, Nuclear is a damned word so we won’t even “go there” in terms of the technology....
We taxpayers now have the honor to pay the incentive rebate of $7,500 - $10,000 per car...
