Only to have the equivalent of a nuclear bomb drop 8 years later.
Ah, now that's a different question entirely. ...much more to the point.
Correction: 4 years later....it only seems longer. Sigh.
Good point. Although it still begs the question, why are Jews so liberal???
Thanks for the link. Good read.
I believe the Jewish relative is his grandfather, not sure what side, but iirc, he went into the washroom at a Boston hotel, and blew his brains out in the early 1900s.
Kerry's Irish at an annual St. Patrick's Day political brunch in Boston, and when campaigning. Otherwise, he's a WASP from the poor side (hence the gigoloism) of the Forbes family - they own Naushon Island out near Martha's Vineyard.
I like that. "Bloomberg Jew".
So you have several generations of Jewish Americans whose political identity has been based on the Democratic Party of Roosevelt and Truman and who, in their hearts of heart, still see Republicans as the rich, wasp, no-Jews-allowed country club set. Add in the intentionally misleading but universally accepted tags of right-wing and left (National Socialism was VERY much a socialist movement and philosophy) and you have the formula for, as with African Americans, a staunch knee jerk core of millions of Democrat voters.
Finally, many American Jews do not have the visceral loyalty to and regard for Israel that their parents and grand parents had a generation or two ago. Like most good Liberals, they are perfectly ready to see the US and anyone on our side (including if not especially Israel) as the force of evil and oppression in the world. How this self hatred began and been fostered through the education system and mass media of this country is maybe the greatest scandal of our history.
Right. Give the Golan heights up and it will turn in to launch sites for the missiles the Palestinians will rain down on Israel. They will have the high ground.
I ask myself how someone like John Kerry could actually be a member of government. What is wrong with the people who keep voting him back in to office?
Another reason Israel is stalling and waiting for President Palin.
A bit misleading to say Kerry is calling for it. The Amir of Qatar told him that you can’t deal with Hamas and Hezbollah without Syria, and that Syria won’t make any moves unless they get the Golan Heights back. That the only to get them involved is to return the Golan Heights.
This is not new. Everyone has known this for decades. Israel under Rabin, Netanyahu in the 90s and Barak in the 90s basically agreed to return the Golan Heights and had the deal all worked out and Assad Sr scuttled it at the last minute. There was a famous meeting where Pres Clinton flew to Geneva because everyone thought the deal was in place and he was going ot seal it and then he showed up and Assad backed out at the last minute.
Even Israel knows they won’t have any deal with Syria without the Golan. Just like they couldn’t have any deal with Egypt without Sinai(and that turned out to be a pretty good deal all things considered).
It’s not like Kerry is proposing some new policy or exerting pressure. He basically said “We hear you”. Besides, in the end Obama makes US policy, not Kerry. Kerry just implements what Obama wants.
The Amir did say some very interesting things about Hamas and their true intentions, their relationship with Syria, Syria’s relationship with Iran, Eygpt’s role in the Peace Process, Iran’s thinking, etc...
He mentioned how the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is hyped up, that families in Gaza were actually turning down financial assistance for the first time.
Kerry showed some astuteness saying he recognizes how China likes seeing us bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan and wants those conflicts to continue at a low grade.
All in all the cables are very fascinating reading.
Thank you for this information. I remember years ago a friend of mine went to Israel and spoke to some people there. I do not remember who they were, but I came away with the impression that many of those Israelis did not want to give up the Golan Heights for strategic reasons; one of them being ceding the high ground to people who were totally committed to destroying their country.
I guess I should dig a little deeper into this issue, if I can find the time. Again, thanks. I have such animosity toward john Kerry that I do not trust anything he says. I have to work on that.
If youd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.

Somebody should tell Lurch to be quiet when grownups are talking.
