(Wikileaks Perfidy, Treason)Cables Shine Light Into Secret Diplomatic Channels
New York Times ^ | November 28, 2010 | SCOTT SHANE and ANDREW W. LEHREN

A cache of a quarter-million confidential American diplomatic cables, most of them from the past three years, provides an unprecedented look at backroom bargaining by embassies around the world, brutally candid views of foreign leaders and frank assessments of nuclear and terrorist threats.

Some of the cables, made available to The New York Times and several other news organizations, were written as recently as late February, revealing the Obama administration’s exchanges over crises and conflicts. The material was originally obtained by WikiLeaks, an organization devoted to revealing secret documents. WikiLeaks intends to make the archive public on its Web site in batches, beginning Sunday.

The anticipated disclosure of the cables is already sending shudders through the diplomatic establishment, and could conceivably strain relations with some countries, influencing international affairs in ways that are impossible to predict.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and American ambassadors around the world have been contacting foreign officials in recent days to alert them to the expected disclosures. On Saturday, the State Department’s legal adviser, Harold Hongju Koh, wrote to a lawyer for WikiLeaks informing the organization that the distribution of the cables was illegal and could endanger lives, disrupt military and counterterrorism operations and undermine international cooperation against nuclear proliferation and other threats.

The cables, a huge sampling of the daily traffic between the State Department and some 270 embassies and consulates, amount to a secret chronicle of the United States’ relations with the world in an age of war and terrorism. Among their revelations, to be detailed in The Times in coming days:

That this deliberate, purposeful act of subversion, treachery, perfidy is taking place during an administration whose only agenda has been utter destruction, demolition of our glorious republic is no mere happenstance. Someone within our government as agent for the administration is implementing a war unprecedented in scope from within, against the USA, the American people. That there are two more years in which to continuing wreaking havoc upon the very institutions, underpinnings of this great nation of ours has me inconsolable as to what heinous plans are yet to be unleashed by the avowed enemy current White House occupier.

It’s only treason if an American was involved in leaking this info. And Obama ain’t no American.

There's a point to confidentiality in diplomacy. No foreign leader wants to talk to your diplomats candidly if he knows its going to hit the New York Times front pages someday.

Not to put too-fine a point on it, ‘treason’ by birth-certificated American citizens who are part of the administration’s “War on America”.

Maybe it’s time to try do do diplomacy differently. Honestly and in the open.

I am for the release.

(1) In the age of mega gigbayte micro-memory and the internet such things can not be kept secret, this is a critical and vital lesson to all.

(2) Where is treason? Treason has already flooded the FEDGOV and elite establishments of our nation.

(3) These releases, while themselves made of malicious and treasonous intent, may prove to be a good thing in routing out the bigger treasons.

Not sure if I’d say they stole it- it was given to them by Pfc Bradley Manning - a soldier who should be shot or failing that- spend the rest of his days at Leavenworth.

(Leaks were) given to them by Pfc Bradley Manning - a soldier who should be shot.... as far as I’m concerned. He is beyond a traitor IMO. Our Kids may well die because of these leaks...in fact the ol’Taliban has already said they will be taking out those who they learn handed over information about their agendas. So no doubt life is going to end for some. As for Wikileaks...he needs to go period. He had the choice to reveal these or not. He put his life at risk for the glory he assumes he will have. No doubt nations less merciful than ours will be after him now.

Thank you. Yes, indeed, I wholeheartedly agree. Your comments all make perfect sense.

In all due respect, I really can not fathom how perspective of such irrefutable lucidity managed to pass me by like that. < / sarc >

I have a awfully low regard of secrets kept by the State Department, much like I have of the State Department itself. < / no sarc >

He should be charged with every death the release of this information is responsible for.

The point is that a lot of times trial balloons are sent through these channels. This is how stuff gets done in business and government; all over the world and right here at home.

No one should be surprised, but it does allow foreign governments and agencies figure out who knew what, and pin down some sources within their own system.

THAT would not be good for the parties involved.

To think that this doesn’t go on is naive. To think this won’t hurt us is naive as well. If we did everything in the open, nothing would get done.
