Feds Seize Websites Suspected of Online Piracy

The U.S. government is shutting down websites suspected of copyright infringement or selling counterfeit goods as Congress debates a bill that would give feds more authority to do so.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), an agency within the Homeland Security Department, has seized more than 70 websites in recent days, according to the Wall Street Journal, and posted a notice saying that the domain name has been seized by ICE through court-ordered warrants. The notice also states penalties for willful copyright infringement and trafficking in counterfeit goods.

Neither ICE nor Homeland Security responded to messages seeking comment. An ICE spokeswoman confirmed to the Wall Street Journal that the agency executed court-ordered seizure warrants against a number of domain names but declined additional comment.

So ICE won`t seize illegal aliens but they`ll get into cyber censorship. WTF?

IP addresses no longer uniquely identify a website, though, so there’d have to be a URL included with the IP and that’s probably a bit much for the average web user, assuming they have any idea what their HOST file is.

DHS and ICE can only affect domain names serviced by ICANN root servers. Nobody has to use those root servers though. The DNS (Domain Naming System) is one of those things that can be, and IS in existence under other than the known root name servers.

I won't go into detail here, but anybody with any network service knowledge (especially DNS) will know that the DHS and ICE is only going to stop lightweights. Those intent on sharing information of any type will continue with impunity.

ICE and HSD are now rogue agencies. Copyrights are NOT their jurisdiction

But look at the precedents being set... allowing the Feds to seize control of domain names. Imagine how useful that will be if they ever find a way to go after Foxnews.com or FreeRepublic.com.

This is just creepy. I know piracy is bad, but, really national security???? Something stinks here, something stinks like yesterdays diapers.

That’s what I’m thinking, somethings up. Is this how they are going to shut down websites they don’t like?

Yes but, what the heck is ICE doing this for? They are suppose to be rounding up illegals, not shutting down websites. This is just weird. There is something more to this.

Exactly, it’s as if Obama has cut lose the head of these agencies letting whoever heads them to use these agencies in whatever way they see fit to use them. It’s just bizarre and chaotic.

They are supposed to handle immigration and customs. This just does not seem to be fit their mission.

I think the FEDs are using this as a test case. As a previous poster aptly said, this is just another step in the plan of the punk president’s plan to muzzle the opposition.

The sites that were taken over are sites that try to make money off of piratted music, movies or goods. No file sharing sites where people just post and share stuff were taken down.

Never thought I’d see Ron Wyden as heroic on anything, but good for him on this lunacy.

I think your right. Like when Rockerfeller threw MSNBC under the bus to make it look like he wasn’t playing favorites when he slammed both Fox and MSNBC. I’m thinking they are doing whatever they can do in the way of power grab before jan.
