Deliberate or Accidental, a New Korean War Would be Devastating
The soaring modern glass towers of downtown Seoul are magnificent -- and to a North Korean artillery officer squinting through his sights from just 32 miles away, a delicious set of targets. The glistening South Korean capital is a city of glass, almost literally in the shadow of some 500 long-range heavy artillery guns from which North Korea can fire half a million artillery shells an hour, for several hours.
A war on the Korean peninsula could explode almost without warning, senior U.S. military officers say. North Korea's immediate, if suicidal, intent in such a conflict: to demolish Seoul in a blizzard of glass shards and cause tens of thousands of casualties, before U.S. and South Korea forces could react.
That is why millions of people living in Seoul regularly practice scrambling into bomb shelters in subway stations -- and why any disruption in "normal'' relations with the reclusive and unpredictable regime to the north quickly gets the world's attention: a surprise attack from the North, whether deliberate or a miscalculation, would be bloody and costly, and likely would trigger all-out war.
Within hours of North Korea's apparently unprovoked artillery attack on South Korean territory and the South's retaliatory artillery barrage, U.S. officials, diplomats and policy analysts were assuring each other that this was only a "provocation'' by the North. The Obama administration took a rhetorical firm but low-key line on Tuesday, with Pentagon Press Secretary Geoff Morrell saying that the North Korean attack was "not, frankly, out of pattern for the North lately."

For short periods of time, perhaps. But sustained for even an hour? I’m skeptical as well.
I see it as we go to war with North Korea, we are going to war with China.
The last thing I want for the U.S. at this time in history, this point in history is to go to war against China lead by this addzhole Obama as CIC, with his puppet Master having other conflicting priorities.
It is one “H” of an ugly picture. Damn the American public for voting in that jerk as President.
How would that be a problem for us? The Republic of Korea blames us for starting the Korean War in 1950 (this really is the majority opinion of their population). The Norks should invade them again to remind them to fork over more danegeld. The ROK’s will pay off. It’s what they’re for. They respect only their enemies.
At this time in history, I wish we had a president in office who would not hesitate to rain fire down on NK if they were to do such a thing. Swift and immediate. Tactical nukes if necessary but a severe whipping of a petulant child that would give pause to ANY any other country contemplating such an action.
Although there's a HUGE difference between "incoherent" and "stoned," Obongo combines both attributes, along with "detached."
Yes, it's a different cowardly Democrat president, but the response will be the same: Talk.
* not mine.
Your comment about China, which may be accurate, reveals the real enemy here.
Because we won’t go after NK we can’t win.
I seriously doubt that each tube has that many rounds total, since the tube itself is not going to survive counter-battery fire very long. Why stack the ammo when the gun is destroyed?
Been that way more or less since the 1950s.
Seoul needs to unload an inmmediate proportional response before this gets out of hand. And THEN the "Peacemakers" can step in.
True, but that's nothing new. Once North Korea was reasonably contained and after the Armistice, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Bush 41, Clinton, and Bush 43 didn't do much, either.
Incidents with North Korea have been occurring for more than 50 years. Some have been even nastier than the current crop of incidents.
Might it be a different world if we seriously were considering taking out NK?
Your not going to fly a C-130 over NK airspace until every MiG & SAM is eliminated. AFAIK the Herk is the only aircraft capable of dropping the MOAB.
They provocate, we cave in and pay them off. It is a long-standing tradition. Look for payoffs from the US of food, oil, money and uranium.
Unless the RoK wants to get used to watching the Norks kill their people for political “posturing” purposes, they have one course of action: A massive coordinated de-fanging and decapitation attack. By de-fanging, I mean take out as many of the Nork’s artillery batteries and nuke facilities as possible. We all know what I mean by decapitating.
Would have to be by surprise, completely coordinated, and fast so it could be done before the Chicoms responded. Then hunker down.
Japan should be consulted first, but they have made it clear that a military response is in order.
Obama should NOT be told. The Won would betray them, probably under cover of “preventing escalation,” but we all know that wouldn’t be his real reason.
The sort of scenario you talked about has little chance of happening even in arcade games. Without US support, South Korea and Japan don’t have the dept of firepower to launch a focused strike which can eliminate most of North Korea’s artillery and missile sites. Besides US forces in the peninsula and Japan would almost certainly be targetted in reprisals.
“If it were up to me, the 35,000 or so American troops standing as sentries for SK would have pulled out decades ago.”
Agreed, but esp now with a CinC (gag) who couldn’t care less if they were all killed and likely wouldn’t do anything if they were.
That’s why we must appease the North Koreans at every opportunity.
New war? It would be a resumption of combat operations of an existing war.
=8-)
