Despite the firestorm of controversy over the use of high-tech body scanners at airports, the hundreds of millions of dollars that the Transportation Security Administration is spending or looking to spend on them makes it unlikely that they'll be getting shelved anytime soon.
Each scanner costs about $130,000 to $170,000, the agency said, and President Obama's budget request for this year calls for $88 million to buy and install 500 new scanners.
The TSA already has already spent $80 million on body scanners, including $73 million received in stimulus funds.

All the companies in the same field as Rapiscan are privately owned, so this spending only benefits the “politically connected” owners, not Joe investor IMHO

That’s one Hell of a big OOPS Obama, and TSA. You better find a buyer for them, and NOT in this country, ‘cause WE ARE MADDER’N HELL, AND AREN’T GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE.
When did we just give up the 4th amendment? Illegal search and seizure? Probable cause? WTF? When will they start doing this at stadiums, subways, schools and on and on.

Just wait till the TSA admits the pics are being stored.
I find this debate semi-humorous. While the pat-downs definitely go over the line, the scanners are no big deal. Is there any one person out there who finds these images the least bit erotic???
It seems that everyone forgets that a plane was almost successfully taken down last Christmas. There are scary people actively working on any means to smuggle arms on board. The scanners are certainly not unreasonable!
Those bombs came from overseas. The scans are intrusive, perverted and will be leaked.
Really want to target the problem, profile and not some 80 year old grandma or 3 year old kid.

“When will they start doing this at stadiums, subways, schools and on and on....
I think that’s the plan.
When we enter the military it’s to be expected we will be subjected to humiliation, nothing being ours, to being torn down so-to-speak, and then being rebuilt into disciplined fighting units. It’s a place we become a collective with one agenda, to kill, to maim, to stop an enemy, and to win.
This same psychology seems to be employed by the fascists against the people in order to herd us into smaller, and smaller areas of control. They intend to control us, and getting us accustomed to humiliation, degradation, as herd animals fits what we are seeing about us today at the hands of the Radicals in charge of our government.
Just say MOO, or B-L-O-A-T
The proved they can get explosives past x-ray scanners with those printer cartridges.
...and one other thing: the undie-bomber had been reported to the authorities by his own family before he left on his flight. We had intel that said he was a threat and ignored it. So, we ignore credible in-our-lap intel and irradiate/grope 340,000 innocent Americans, stopping exactly ZERO threats.
Is it unreasonable yet?
The answer to your question is, yes, someone out there finds these images erotic and there would be a market for them if they were released. And it does matter - why in the name of all that’s right and pure would I want to have someone take a shot of me or my children nude. But that’s exactly what potentially happens every time I have to take my kids to the airport 3 times a year. They get 6 shots a year at being scanned and/or groped. My 17 yo was not pleased at all with the prospects of being scanned or searched having read accounts online. Frankly - I’m being way nicer than I feel in response to your post. They do NOT have to do this crap - there are other ways to address this problem. On another note - exactly how many underwear bombers have there been since last Christ and before they started using these scanners and search methods. None.
There are certainly other holes in security for airline travel but this is one area that has been exploited. The scanners are a significant deterrent to individuals trying to smuggle explosives on themselves.
There is a very real threat today that needs to be addressed. Scanners are one way to do this. And to the perverted comment, please let me know if you think these scans are the least bit erotic!
Oh, so you don’t even expect to get security out of the deal? You think it’s reasonable, just because it is.
Wow.
1) Prior or post 9/11, how many planes have been hijacked and flown into buildings? Does that mean securing cockpits is going overboard? It only takes one time - we need to take reasonable precautions to address attack vectors
2) Unrecognizable images with outlines of genitalia. I don't see this as unreasonable and I just can't see any market for this (heck, you can get this from the news, internet, etc..). Who the heck would go for x-rays??? That being said, I know you disagree.
3) Groping - This is a big issue and will be changed. I used to travel in eastern Europe in the 90’s and begin frisked was very common. This was no big deal to me as it was not unexpected and it was done by trained military. While many in the TSA are professionals, there is certainly a large percentage who should not be involved in anyway with any type of security let alone pat-downs. This will change within 90 days.
4) Please suggest the other ways to address that have any reasonable expectation of getting implemented.
