The American political climate for achieving change is very, very ugly, according to Bruce Springsteen, as he launched a staunch defence of Barack Obama.
"There's a widespread political consciousness that's perhaps deeper in Europe than it is in the States, he told the Sunday Times magazine.
The climate [in America] is very, very ugly for getting things done. The moderate reforms President Obama fought to make are called Marxist, socialist.
I mean, the most extreme language is put into play to describe the most modest reforms that would move the economy back towards serving a majority of its citizens.
The musician, often referred to as "The Boss", added: You have a guy [Mr Obama] who comes in, he gets to be president for four years. Maybe eight.
But you have the financial institutions, you have the military, the corporations. They're in play constantly and, in truth, they're shaping the economy and shaping the direction the US is moving in.
Those forces are huge. The money and lobbyists are pouring in to do everything they can [to preserve the status quo]. It's a very tough time, a very hard time here in the States."
In his interview, Springsteen admitted that his decision to support Mr Obama had alienated some of his fans.
He once criticised Ronald Reagan, the late American President, for using his name to rally Republican voters in the 1980s.
"A moment comes when you cash in whatever credibility a guy can have who plays and sings rock songs for a living and you put your chips where you think they might do some good, he said.

I tell you, these people are predictable as clockwork. They’re angry again and sound just like they did back in the Bush years. Running to Europe to rag on America, just like they always do.
We need to assemble a tactical wedgie squad to humiliate them.
Get out of our country Bruce. I think you are more attuned to the Europeans, you should go live with them. We don’t want you here, we’re sick of your posturing.
This guy can’t sing but in his songs wines about the working man from Jersey. He is so full of SH*T. I wish this moron would just STFU and go away, he is so over rated!!!
this guy is so full of hypocritical liberal sh*t....he did a 60 minutes interview i made the mistake of watching in 2008....he was talking about the Bush era and “voter repression, stolen elections, blah-blah-blah”....
but like every good leftist that’s called patriotic dissent....voicing opinions against ayatollah obama today somehow creates a bad political climate...
always hated his music, as well...
Bugger off, Bruce. You don’t know your ass from a hole in the ground.
Good call.
When it comes to Rock and Roll thinkers Bruce is 'Dancing in the Dark.'
The guy talks like a high school radical. Writes “Ghost of Tom Joad” thirty years after everyone, but the most hardened leftist, updated their view of communism — and the horror it brought — that Steinbeck celebrated in Grapes of Wrath. At least Steinbeck didn’t fully know what was coming in 1939 when he wrote the book. Springsteen has no such excuse, except rank ignorance.
[Apologies to the European FReepers]
5.56mm
His last hit was in the mid 1990s
Well put.
yeah well, I’m a lawyer and the only ones that can put a hex on the folking TSA that I can see are lawyers and they will do it too, but there are a lot of liberal as8hole loudmouth lawyers that would just as soon climb a tree to tell a lie than stand on the ground to tell the truth.
I am one that tells the truth even if i don’t know why because if I wouldn’t it would effect my ability to detect a lie, yeah my BS meter isn’t perfect but it isn’t bad.
This guy is 100% dirtbag. I don’t even want him to “shut up and sing”, I just want him to shut up and go away.
is he simply affirming it??? cause he sure as hell isn't denying it...
LLS
Grapes of Wrath has also been seen as anti-communist.
What's really disturbing is that he thinks he's so smart. He and Zero suffer from the same derangement syndrome.
