Cheap Thanksgiving: Serve Roadkill Instead of Turkey

(Nov. 22) -- With turkey prices at an all-time high this year, you may want to seriously consider serving another type of meat at your Thanksgiving dinner -- roadkill -- since it's fresh, fast and free.

According to Midwest hunter Buck Peterson, author of "The Original Roadkill Cookbook" (Ten Speed Press) and other humorous outdoor parodies, the most efficient way to do Thanksgiving on the cheap is to serve your guests freshly hit and roasted roadkill instead of a traditional turkey.

"This time of year is perfect for nabbing a deer on the road. The rut is on, and bucks are only thinking about romance, so they're being much more careless about crossing busy roads to get to the does," Peterson told AOL News. "In these next three weeks, there are very high chances for fresh meat straight off the road."

In MD, if you’re the law-abiding type, you gotta call the state police and have them tag it first.

*But* I’ve seen many a deer that was there on my way to town gone when I came home a couple hours later and I know the county carcass crew doesn’t work nights.

‘Bout a month ago during a good cold night, we passed a good fat doe coming up the mountain and by the time we went a couple miles home to put plastic in the Yukon and come back, she was gone.

I hadn’t told the dogs about their upcoming “treat” so they’re weren’t disappointed, at least.

The overwhelming german attitude is order all you wish - but you better eat it.

Yep. It was the same way in Stuttgart.

Oh he wasn't that hungry. Now when you do that with the wind in your face...then you're hungry!

Uh. The buzzards out here constantly scour the countryside for anything they can get. They get tired of possums, so an occasional deer, or even skunk is like ambrosia to them. I guess they haul the bones away, clean them, and drop them in the ditches and fields. - I don’t think they like to have to clean up one of their own. I once saw a bunch sitting in trees beside the road near here looking hesitant. One of their number was dead on the road; so I took a stick and scooted him into the ditch under some leaves and brush. I felt gratitude directed to me; don’t know how to explain it, but I did sense their gratitude.

I’m 77 years old and no one has ever been able to explain to me why Deer are segregated, Male on side of the road and Female on the other? I still have my Road Kill Cookbook but better then that is the Original print edition of Manifold Destiny aka Cooking your Bird on the way to Gramma’s house...

I think I’m going to have to eat turkey on thanksgiving but will refuse any leftovers to bring home, unless it comes in round pans and has a crust.

That's easy and you should know this, they're just playing hard to get.
