N. Korea fires artillery towards S. Korean island, official says
SEOUL, Nov. 23 (Yonhap) -- North Korea on Tuesday fired several rounds of artillery towards South Korean waters and an island near the tense west sea border, the South's military said.
The North's artillery shells fell at 2:34 p.m. in the South's waters off the island of Yeonpyeong, some of them landing directly on the island, said Col. Lee Bung-woo, spokesman at the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The South's military responded with its artillery firing.

The Debka article talks about UN deliberation. China would sabotage and let the steam out of urgency. If they must attack, bypass Chicom.

Sorry my link didn’t work.
I’m surprised Gibbs looked so feisty this morning, I mean he actually looked like he was mad.

A couple of well-placed cruise missiles fired from anonymous sea vessels would put an end to this activity quickly. That would be my response.

immediately end all strikes. NK strikes are over, and SK reprisals have not really begun. If you care about the situation so much, park your missiles next to N. Korea, ready to fire if NK causes further trouble. However, you won't do it. We all know why.
Screw you Russia.

Ain’t been the first time that’s happened while I’ve been here.
Most likely, the Nork’s will clam up on the military side and then use the incident to talk *REALLY* loudly on the political front.
So it’d all depend on what the South Korea President does, considering that ours ain’t worth a flying rat’s @ss.
That said, the South Korean people were not happy with his hard-line against North Korea over the Chonan sinking, for they thought it a needless risk, jeopardizing their prosperity. So, I’m wondering if the South Korean people will react the same this time around.
Of course, this involved civilians seeing, first hand, the horror and devastation wrought by the Norks, unlike the Chonan. So maybe the South Korean civilian population will be out for blood, having had some of their own spilled now?

NK fires on SK.....SK retaliates....limited to moderate conflaguration on the Korean peninsula.
If the US does NOT help its ROK allies....Look for:
EVERYONE to be emboldened to attack allies of NATO/US. OBAMA YOU PIECE OF SHIT WIMP!
You'll see Iran burn off a low yield nuke.
You'll see Iranian Republican Guard in Afghanistan killing NATO and US troops.
You'll see Indonesia and India (foes of China) backing away from SEATO/US and cozying up with China.
You'll see more brushfire wars in Central Africa, esp. Kenya/Congo with more and more AlQueda types proping up.
You'll see Yemen export terrorism into more brazen attacks.
You'll probably see Syria/Lebanon attack Israel with tacit support from other Arab countries. Hell, even Turkey might get involved.
Russia may take the REST of Georgia or other CIS states.
You'll see FARC and other narco-commie forces make strides and gains in South America.
GAWD....the list is endless....our wet paper sack president is AWOL, probably on a cocaine high while our allies are getting SHELLED.....Does it make you feel better that Chewbacca, the mother in law, Biden, Pelosi, Axlerod or Valarie Jarrett are the ones answering the phone?

They could just be setting the tone. Russian mobsters like to make a buck.

“SK reprisals have not really begun”
Do you really think there is a chance they will begin? Lee had some pretty tough language after the Cheonan incident to the effect of “never again” . . . I’m not holding my breath.

Right about the TKD incident. The locals are mad as hell about that. I just saw the beginnings of reportage about the NORK attack here on Taiwan new here. Useless babbling with no connection what-so-ever to reality.
TV (and print) news here bears a distinct resemblance to chickens with their heads cut off.

I know. For all practical purposes, it may not matter. However, Russia is indeed trying to close out any possible retaliation.

1133: Secretary Kwon, attache at the Ministry of Defence in Seoul, tells BBC World Service: “Our military is reinforced, and is ready and prepared for any additional provocation from the North. The firing has now stopped. Civilians are in shelters.”
Quoting: [link to news.bbc.co.uk]
I think the ROK is still a little concerned that this may not be over, hence keeping the civilians in the shelters.
To: gogogodzilla
Yeah, Kimpo is safer than Inchon. However, still close to trouble zone, if things go dicey along NLL or DMZ.

SHUT UP RUSSIA AND JUST STAY OUT OF IT AND MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS. You were a facilitator, along with China, during the four years of charade known as SIX PARTY TALKS which allowed for strung out negotiations at the table, all the while the sneaky, bastard Norksbehind the scenes testing Taepodong-II ICBM missiles, undergound nuclear tests, and building light water reactors at Yongbyong. STFU and while you are at it, get F out of the Japanese Hopporyoudo (Northern Island) 北方領島。where you don't belong and have not belonged for 65 years...

Depending on how NK interprets SK and U.S. response, it may not be over. NK is now demanding that SK tuck its tail and run away. They want SK out of the boundary they set(which includes current SK territorial water.)
