Do federal, state and local governments have a right to intervene in our lives when it comes to choices affecting our health?
Recently, San Francisco's board of supervisors voted to forbid restaurants from giving gifts with meals that contain too much fat and sugar, a measure aimed at McDonald's Happy Meals. The reasoning of these tyrants is to prevent McDonald's from using toys to lure children into liking foods the board deems non-nutritious.
Fortunately, San Francisco's mayor, Gavin Newsom, by no means a libertarian, has threatened to veto the measure saying, "Despite its good intentions, I cannot support this unwise and unprecedented governmental intrusion into parental responsibilities and private choices."
If the board of supervisors gets away with this intrusion into parental responsibilities and choices, we can bet the rent money that they will not stop with McDonald's Happy Meals. The reason is that Happy Meals are not the only contributors to child obesity. What and how much they eat at home, what time they eat and how much they exercise play a role.
When the San Francisco supervisors see that their Happy Meal ban has not produced the desired results, they'll seek to widen their reach. That might include laws that set purchase limits on non-nutritious items in the city's grocery stores.

...Think back to the 1964, the time of the "First Surgeon General Report: Smoking and Health." Back then, tobacco zealots called for "reasonable" measures such as warning labels on cigarettes and restrictions on advertising.
Oh, ha-ha, I can't remember 1964...
Fortunately, San Francisco's mayor, Gavin Newsom, by no means a libertarian, has threatened to veto the measure saying, "Despite its good intentions, I cannot support this unwise and unprecedented governmental intrusion into parental responsibilities and private choices."Oh. my. God.
A San Francisco politician making sense?
What the hell is this world coming to?
You should hear some of my collegues who think that this would be perfectly ok.
What the hell is this world coming to?
I know, it's like the same cosmic tear in the universe that I feel when the (Detroit) Lions don't lose...
The kids will be smokin’ dope in front of Mickey D’s waitin’ for the Happy Meal pusher man.
I know, it's like the same cosmic tear in the universe that I feel when the (Detroit) Lions don't lose...Cosmic tear, hell---when your Lions or my Mets don't lose what I feel is a helluvan impersonation of the Crab Nebula . . .
;)
Have a good evening, BluesDuke!
You too, Lady Maggie! ;)
Nanny State PING!
Or abusing prescription pain medication like Percocet and Oxycontin.
It’s cheaper than cigarettes, you can use them anywhere in any club and it’s probably a lot more fun.
Libs will wish for the good old days where smoking a cigarette in the boys room was their biggest problem.
Thanks for the ping!
Well, you know things have gone badly off the tracks when Gavin Newsom is your voice of reason. It just highlights how absurd this law really is.
It just highlights how absurd this law really is.
Is it the law that is absurd? Or should our question actually be, by what Right do they legislate such insanity?
And before folks go off on 0bamacare, consider these types of laws existed before 0bamacare. These laws will not go away if 0bamacare is repealed, so the question remains...by what Right do they tell us what we can/can't eat?
By the Right of your tax dollars? Not everyone who eats these things have your tax dollars paying for their care, although one could argue our tax dollars should not be collected or spent on such things.
But consider the fact that they are legislating against all of us. Taxpayer, non-taxpayer, insurance payer, non-insurance payer...
So, the question remains...what Right are they infringing upon with such legislation?
There is NO constitutional right to a toy in a happy meal.
Plus, Newsom is showboating, his veto will be overridden.
Our children will be safe from the devious incursions of CorporateMarketers.
It is eerily scary, isn’t it, how so many Americans welcome the diktats of the NannyState.
Well, time to subvert as many kids as one can into the principles of liberty and individual rights.
I gave a copy of the Constitution to my 10 year old nephew.
That’s putting subversive ideas in their minds.
I would only add that you must include "personal responsibility" with the "individual rights" part. Most kids actually are quite well versed in their "rights" (in quotes, because health care is NOT a right)
What they sometimes seem to lack is a sense of understanding the nature of a right versus a wish.
PS: Your tagline is so fitting for this thread.
This is certainly a nit, but to me the freedoms that come with rights inherently carry the burden of responsiblity with them.
And thanks for the tagline compliment.
Unfortunately, your stance is fast becoming nothing more than a quaint sentiment. I'm glad that your nephew will have a chance to learn that rights and responsibilities are yoked together.
And thanks for the tagline compliment.
You are very welcome. Have a good evening.
