The White House announced Monday that Kristina Schake, a former aide to California first lady Maria Shriver, has been named as first lady Michelle Obama's new communications director.
Schake – who has experience promoting healthy lifestyles for children, one of Michelle Obama’s signature issues – will start the East Wing position in December. She replaces Camille Johnston, who left the position over the summer to begin work as a senior vice president at Siemens.
In a statement Monday, Obama said Schake "brings a wealth of expertise that I know will make her a tremendous asset in the East Wing.”
“Kristina has done extensive work throughout her career on child nutrition and community health issues, and that paired with her experience as part of a military family will bring invaluable insight to our work on childhood obesity and our efforts to support military families,” the first lady said. “I look forward to working with Kristina on these efforts and more in the months and years ahead.”
Shriver’s former communications strategist, Schake is a co-founder and principal of Griffin Schake, a California-based public affairs and strategic communications firm that has done work on cell research and early childhood education issues as well as renewable energy and civil rights. She has worked with non-profit organizations and civic leaders to "bring about critical social change through policy, legislative, social marketing and media initiatives," the White House said in a statement.
A White House aide says Schake is a "good fit" for the first lady because while working for Shriver she was the director of the Governor’s Summit on Obesity, and was the communications director for First 5 California, which provides education, health care, child care and nutrition programs for the state’s youngest children.
The first lady's press secretary, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, will continue to handle the day-to-day press operation, which includes travel with the first lady.

The current one sounds like a travel buddy Michelle needs to hang out with her as she jets around the country spending the taxpayers cash. She already had more servants, er, aides, than any FLOTUS in history, now she needs even more? When is enough, ENOUGH America?

Schake is a co-founder of American Foundation for Equal Rights - “the sole organizational sponsor of the groundbreaking federal court case to overturn California’s Proposition 8.”
