The two Republicans whose names came up most often on the NR cruise? Sarah Palin and Chris Christie.
In my interactions with only a fraction of the 700+ NR cruisegoers mostly older, mostly well-off, passionate about politics, and many heavily involved with the tea parties I found about two-thirds wildly enthusiastic about Sarah Palin; you could hear the gasps when Scott Rasmussen predicted she would not be the 2012 Republican nominee. Most of the remaining one-third said that while they personally liked Palin, they didnt want to see her run in 2012, or anytime soon. An isolated few didnt seem to like Palin much at all.
I was struck by how many Palin fans agreed with me that resigning the governorship, while understandable, is a serious misstep for any aspiring president. If you want to govern, it is best to demonstrate that you can govern.
The Palin family has taken over your television, between Sarah Palins Alaska on TLC and Bristol Palin dancing up a storm on Dancing With the Stars. Youre also seeing Palin on the cover of People and other non-political magazines. Its odd to see a Republican begin to master the domination of pop culture that Obama practiced in 2007 and 2008, and this is certainly a way to keep Palin enthusiasts at a fever pitch. But Im not sure this approach gets her where she wants to go, or at least whether it wins over the folks who arent on board with her already.

NOPE.
NRO ARTICLES AFTER NOVEMBER 2 HAS SHAPESHIFTED INTO “NARCISSIST ROMNEY ORACLE”!
The Romney-paid hackers are singing incantation to worship their Deity... Smooth Romney!
I’m with you, Gaffer!
Ditto. Sarah needs to get much more specific in terms of major policy issues. The nightmare scenario is her getting -- or even appearing to get -- schooled in a debate with Romney, or worse, 0bama.
Oh, and what patronizing little nambies too many of the NRO writers are. I am sick of their condescension to Palin (and all her supporters).
as a William F. Buckley, steering the debate rather than running for office...
Yep. And I wouldn’t mind her being an appointee ala John Bolton, just to hear the blood pressure rise in San Fran.
“But a lot of conservatives are not eager for a Palin candidacy”
I don’t know any.... Not even one true conservative.
I know some Mitt bots, but again, no true conservatives that are not eager for Palin to run...
That may have been true some time in the past, but the Obama election and presidency has overturned all such rules.
If a person with...
I share this concern, but what can we do? I expect Mittens and Hucklebuck are in for sure, so if Sarah is in then the second conservative will be starting out in fourth place in a four-way race. Add two more conservatives and it's fourth and fifth places in a five-way race, etc. It almost seems we conservatives have little choice but Sarah unless either Mittles or Hucky choose not to run. How could a John Bolton (my favorite) or a Herman Cain or whoever hope to get any traction in a crowded field with three frontrunners?
Palin has said that if a "real" Conservative runs, she won't and will instead help that candidate, so if Pence announces, which it appears he will, there won't be the problem you describe.
National Review is in a small bed. With Mitt Romney.
They are robot RomneyBOTs.
That is because anyone who does not endorse her is immediately branded as a "MittBot".
Virtually no one I know is going to vote for Palin... because she is not conservative enough. I vote for record, not populism.
We will see. But if Romney trips her up on economic issues, she’s toast.
In this environment, any candidate that doesnt understand the economy has no shot at all. With people losing their jobs and their homes...economic issues will trump social issues.
So, what's the lady to do? Well, now..just about whatever she wants. Has fun doing it, making a ton of $$$$..good for her..and has the freedom to say and do anything. She was a very successful force in the midterm election, and she very much wants to see a conservative GOP victorious in 2012. She recognizes the need to get Dude out fo the WH. So she can to a large extent, "shape" the early part of the GOP nomination process. There are now some 10-14 candidates..some serious, some pretenders, a few just posturing. I agree that the primary process/season is waay to long..therefore we need to get some of these people out of the game early. She can do that..just by hinting that she's contemplating a run...and take most of the oxygen and $$$ away. And then, towards the end of the year, she'll announce that she's not running, and endorse whom she chooses, and that willpretty much rap it up. And she'll be a huge fund raiser for theticket, and campaign tirelessly. And after, well, I'd love to see her in a Cabinet position, maybe Interior Secretary, where she can focus on ending the piles of restrictions on the use of federal lands, open up exploration and drillind in the continental states, and even start to sell off, and/or return to the states, the land what the feds have been grabbing for decades.
I just get flipping tired of these shallow statements...
That implies voters can look at an issue with clear eyes, beyond the notion of "change." On Nov 2, much of 0bama's agenda was rejected, not his background. Why does this matter? The media gives 0bama a pass on the background issue. Were he a GOPer in 2008, they would've shredded him from coast to coast. That's what Sarah will face if she throws in for 2012.
Most of us understand and appreciate the reasons for Sarah's quitting the governorship of Alaska. The financial toll from defending against those frivolous "ethics complaints" took a huge toll on the Palins. Of course it wasn't that Sarah is a quitter... we as conservatives understand... but the overall electorate isn't as thoughtful, especially when prodded in a particular direction by a leftist media.
If Sarah does run in 2012, she will have to address that issue... and it'll be a tough sell.
I think the world of Sarah Palin and will support her if she's the nominee, but I'd rather see her opt for RNC Chair or something in which she can better leverage her strengths.
Somebody needs to make a deal.
We need ONE conservative candidate to counter the RINOs.
I completely agree. She can rely only on broad opinions for so long. People are going to want to know... What are the steps she plans to take to pull the country out of the mess?
You need to get out more. Talk to people.
I know lots of conservatives who love Palin, some who don't, and many of the former don't want her running for prez. And the polls suggest my experience is typical.
I think that is part of the reason for the rock climbing, halibut fishing, snow skiing, etc, to portray her as being physically as well as emotionally and mentally strong...
