Apparently so. When Gold was drilling that 7.5km deep well in the bottom of a meteorite crater in Sweden (Siljan) directly into basement rock, below any sedimentary strata, they found a lot of oil, but everything kept getting clogged with fine-grained magnetite that was consistent with something formed by bacteria living at depth off the petroleum.
