Video posted on the CBS Los Angeles website shows an object flying through the evening sky Monday that left a large contrail, or vapor trail. While cruising the skies Monday at sunset, Sky2 captured on video what appears to be a missile making its way up into the sky from over the Pacific Ocean off the California coast.
Pentagon officials were stumped by the event. Nobody within the Department of Defense that weve reached out to has been able to explain what this contrail is, where it came from, Pentagon spokesman Col. Dave Lapan said.

Nope, not missiles, not chemtrails, or not in the sense of government plots. When I was working in ag chem in the San Joaquin Valley of CA, those were known as “Portugee cropdusters” at work.
We've all seen tens, if not hundreds of thousands of contrails. Some of us have seen them under a variety of circumstances ~ in fact, I've seen them at more than a dozen California airports over the years. Most Californians haven't been in and out in so many places.
Sometimes they have super clear air over the Pacific and yet down below you'll see a cloudbank rolling in and covering up the ground street by street. Saw that over San Fran several times ~ it's incredibly beautiful ~ particularly if you schedule yourself so you are flying over at SUNDOWN.
HO LEE CR@P!!!!!!!!!
You are the next Buckhead.
Look, I am no expert at video or contrails, but nearly every single day at this time I go out and look at that sky over the ocean. I have been seeing a lot of contrails lately. Yesterday there were many, crisscrossing the sky. Nothing EVER looks like that missile. Nothing EVER does.
One can never let reality intrude on a good delusion.
Some people will believe anything if the right person tells them.
And as a matter of fact, NO these are NOT the droids you are looking for.
I am not sure what I see is what you are saying, so bear with me.
Looking at the “Raw Video” at 26 seconds frame by frame to 28 seconds, I see the original object while another object is fading IN on the left. As the object on the left becomes clearer, the object on the right fades OUT.
Doesn’t raw mean unedited?
Using the cloud as a frame of reference, they are almost a mirror image of each other.
It doesn’t matter how they spliced the video. It’s video of a missile.
Look at the frame at :29 in my graphic in post #1. You are seeing exactly what I saw and posted: a "cross-wipe" or "cross-fade" editing transition.
In a cross-fade, the original gets progressively less opaque, and the incoming grows progressively more opaque. Midway through the transition the frames are equally opaque, so both can be seen at once (albeit a bit indistinctly).
So, yes -- you are seeing at :28-:29 a fade from Frame 5 to frame 3 -- with both visible at once. That's a very common editing technique -- but CBS presented the video as "unedited" -- or "raw".
Good catch!
I thought that was what you were describing, but wasn’t sure. Nothing wrong with your explanation—just the way my brain processes some information. It doesn’t. At least until I can take it apart, put it together, take it apart, put it together. :-)
thx thx
Now that you explain it, your research is so obvious. That “carving fork” shaped cloud is proof. Great, great job.
I still don’t know what it is, but now I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the public was shown film out of order. (Of course, I also don’t know WHY.)
I left the office today and there were at least 10 contrails in the sky today, all very long. Which is logical, as the weather has changed in the last few days, and I would expect to see long contrails.
But, I understand science, I know about optical illusions, I know that there is an explainable answer for outrageous claims with no proof.
Pity that other’s can’t figure that out.
I saw a rocket launch last year. It moved *much* faster than this thing did.
There was another video that showed an aircraft approaching the object from the right, going about the same speed.
I’m in the airplane crowd.
“But, I understand science, I know about optical illusions”
The thing about optical illusions is that knowledge of them doesn’t prevent them from ‘working’.
I like these cube examples-

Telling people to believe you and not their lying eyes can be a tough sell even with logic and science on your side.
The following is a link to some independent video footage of the event on 8th Nov 2010. Unfortunately it is short.

This person also recorded a contrail on the 9th Nov 2010.

Those are coming from the top of the photo. The CA shows it coming from the bottom.
There have been many posters who deny that there is 10 minutes of footage that CBS won’t let us see. They claim the pilot/photographer/CBS did not claim they have 10 minutes of video.
Well, here it is. From the MOUTH OF CBS ITSELF.

The video of what looks for all the world like the contrail of a missile was shot Monday evening by KCBS cameraman Gil Leyvas from a news helicopter over Los Angeles.
“I saw a big plume coming up, rising from looked like beyond the horizon and it continued to grow,” Leyvas said.
He zoomed his camera in and stayed on it for about 10 minutes. To him it looked like an incoming missile.
OPTICAL ILLUSIONS
A contrail going straight overhead appears to be a straight line. It isn’t, it’s a curved line.
The Sun , viewed over the ocean, appears to come straight up out of the water. Which we know it really doesn’t.
The SUN or MOON appear to be very large when first ‘rising’ over the horizon, then gets smaller as it ‘rises’ higher.
The Sun and Moon do not really change size.
How many times have we misplaced our car keys, and been unable to find them. Then , WHOOPS, turns out they were RIGHT IN FRONT OF US ALL THE TIME. We didn’t see them because we were SURE they weren’t where they SHOULD BE.
For those who doubt they can be fooled, I used to do this test:
On a piece of paper, draw a large triangle. Inside it, draw a large circle. Now, write this inside the circle.
Paris in the
the spring
Show your doubter the paper, hold it up for about 5 seconds and ask them what it says. They will repeatedly state it says PARIS IN THE SPRING.
Thanks for the kudos -- and thanks for that new "shorthand" term!!
Now, we can just say "the fork" and everyone will be on the same page in technical discussions. (And, yes, they are still ongoing via FReepMail and e-mail and on pivate websites...)
Seriously -- we old-school scientists (who would use fifteen syllable words if we could find them) need the sharp minds of the FReeper community to help us come up with "real" terminology sometimes. Thanks again! :-)
Yes it does. Especially if they use special effects while 'splicing'. Besides, the important part is what they didn't show.
Here's a frame from the video they won't show the public.
You demanded a link to CBS or the photographer saying he filmed for over 10 minutes.
