The US government may require cars to include scrambling tech that would disable mobile-phone use by drivers, and perhaps passengers.

"I think it will be done," US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said on Wednesday morning, according to The Daily Caller. "I think the technology is there and I think you're going to see the technology become adaptable in automobiles to disable these cell phones."

LaHood is on a self-described "rampage" against distracted driving, and if making it impossible to use a mobile phone while in a car can save lives, he's all for it — although, according to TDC, LaHood also emphasized the role of "personal responsibility."

In a Tuesday blog post announcing an online video series, "Faces of Distracted Driving", which presents first-person accounts of distracted-driving tragedies, LaHood noted that "Just last year, nearly 5,500 people were killed and 500,000 more were injured in distracted driving-related crashes.

Great idea! If my daughter or wife is driving along a dark rural highway and a nutcase is trying to run them off the road, their cell phone will be disabled. Wonderful.

Send the orderlies from the local nut house with a
straight jacket and some Thorazine for LaHood. The
mentally ill shouldn’t be left with competent
supervision.

The golden age of the auto industry was from around 1990 or so through 2002-2004. The cars built during this period were safer, more powerful, more luxurious, and more reliable than any other. If you take a well kept car from that time period it will be a nicer drive overall than many of the vehicles sold on the market today.

There will be a device that defeats this nonsense on the day it is installed.

And your Android phone with Google based GPS
mapping/navigation won’t have access to the
google mapping application in the car making it
perfectly worthles. Guaranteed to kill the smart
phone industry. I repeat, the man is a mentally
ill incompetent on a power trip. Time to remove
him and find a sane replacement.

"I think it will be done," US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said on Wednesday morning, ...

Last time ray lahood was elected it was as a Republican.

Turns out he is just another piece of trash that doesn't deserve to have his name capitalized.

“”I think the technology is there and I think you're going to see the technology become adaptable in automobiles to disable these cell phones.”

I really really hope they try to do this. I am heartened to see Nancy Pelosi put at the front for them.

I was afraid they would wise up, but it looks like not.
Maybe we can have 70 Senate seats in 2012?

The government forced seat belts and Helmet laws, they can do just about anything they like.

When my wife and I go out she answers the cell phone, when I wish to speak I pull over to the side of the road.

It would appear to me that cell phones have become so important to American life that banning them would be ridiculous, but that is what today’s government is-—ridiculous.

Next they will ban GPS, because so many people are watching the GPS screen instead of where they are going.

I don’t think this will win Obama the youth vote in 2012.

*The candidate noted that he hoped to inspire, JFK-like, the young to public service.
“One of the things I think we might be able to do is make government cool again,” he said. “And that is desperately needed.”*

(think this would be a FAIL on coolness, Obama)

Lots of reasons this is a bad idea:

"911 - I've been in an accident and I'm pinned in my car!!" Hello, 911?...{crickets}

"911 - I'm all alone on my way home and I'm being followed by a large truck..." Hello, 911?...{crickets}

"911 - I'm following a possible drunk driver down xxx, he's swerving all over the road, unsteady speed..." Hello, 911?...{crickets}

"911 - There was just an accident at ... I don't want to get out of my car along this busy roadway, I might get hit..."

They try this {excrement} and I will disable said jammer.
