Refudiate - Has Obama made similar gaffes?
None ^ | None | Vanity

Posted on 11/18/2010 10:02:41 AM PST by Steve_Seattle

Sarah Palin's usage/invention of the word "refudiate" in a Twitter message has again been referenced in a story in The New York Times. Setting aside the question of whether "refudiate" was the result of ignorance, an innocent typo, or whimsical invention, I'm wondering if Obama has ever made a similar gaffe concerning the spelling or meaning of a word. I know there was the "57 state" gaffe, the mispronunciation of "corpsman", the reference to the non-existent Austrian language, and so forth, but I'm curious about gaffes specifically involving word usage or spelling.

But “Me and Barack” is often correct.

Such as, “Jeremiah Wright gave me and the bisexual muslim kenyan crackhead a great kwanzaa gift today.”

INHALATOR - My submission for Obama made up word gaffe.

OBAMA: Everybody knows that it makes no sense that you send a kid to the emergency room for a treatable illness like asthma, they end up taking up a hospital bed, it costs, when, if you, they just gave, you gave them treatment early and they got some treatment, and a, a breathalyzer, or inhalator, not a breathalyzer. (crowd laughing) I haven’t had much sleep in the last 48 hours.

*Earlier this month in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, Obama showed off his knowledge of the war in Afghanistan by honing in on a lack of translators: “We only have a certain number of them and if they are all in Iraq, then it’s harder for us to use them in Afghanistan.” The real reason it’s “harder for us to use them” in Afghanistan: Iraqis speak Arabic or Kurdish. The Afghanis speak Pashto, Farsi, or other non-Arabic languages.

Sorry, she uses it as the subject of her sentences.

Explaining last week why he was trailing Hillary Clinton in Kentucky, Obama again botched basic geography: “Sen. Clinton, I think, is much better known, coming from a nearby state of Arkansas. So it’s not surprising that she would have an advantage in some of those states in the middle.” On what map is Arkansas closer to Kentucky than Illinois?

Last May, he claimed that Kansas tornadoes killed a whopping 10,000 people: “In case you missed it, this week, there was a tragedy in Kansas. Ten thousand people died — an entire town destroyed.” The actual death toll: 12.

He once talked about his Muslim faith, and George Stephanopolous corrected him, said, “... you mean your Christian faith....”.

Oh... you are looking for gaffes, not lies?

Only gaffes by conservatives matter.

Gaffes are something the liberal media gloms onto to sway independent voters away from conservatives...and it works.

If, however, someone were to question the liberal media about a gaffe by a liberal candidate, their response would be...

"Picky, picky...don't you ever make mistakes?"

Dunno, listening to some Austrians, what they speak may as well be another language besides German. Austrian is worse than Bavarian, and Bavarian is what they used in the German dubbed version of Airplane for the two black guys who needed their “Jive” language translated.

And in perhaps the most seriously troubling set of gaffes of them all, Obama told a Portland crowd over the weekend that Iran doesn’t “pose a serious threat to us” — cluelessly arguing that “tiny countries” with small defense budgets can’t do us harm — and then promptly flip-flopped the next day, claiming, “I’ve made it clear for years that the threat from Iran is grave.”

You know, I’m trying to think of a sentence that’s not crazily convoluted that could BEGIN, “Me and Barack...” Coming up blank.

Not quite on topic, but Obama made a Memorial Day speech and looked out at the audience and said:

"On this Memorial Day, as our nation honors its unbroken line of fallen heroes -- and I see many of them in the audience here today -- our sense of patriotism is particularly strong."

On what map is Arkansas closer to Kentucky than Illinois?

Since he is from Kenya, I believe his geographical reference was correct.

Pronouncing “Orion” as OR-EE-ON rather than O-RYE-UN. First time I thought the guy was actually a complete moron rather than simply just an imposter.

The “me and him” thing as the subject is especially funny for those people who heard you’re supposed to say “I” to sound more intelligent, resulting in “he and I.” So they then also change the “me” to “I” when saying something like “Between Barack and I.”

I don’t know if Michello’s said that, but I would expect it.

* “From the bomb that fell on Pearl Harbor….” * “John McCain has not talked about my Muslim faith.” * “There was something stirring across the country because of what happened in Selma, Alabama, because some folks are willing to march across a bridge. So they got together and Barack Obama Jr. was born.” (Obama was born in 1961 and the Selma march was in 1965) * “I've now been in 57 states, I think, one left to go.” * “….when you spread the wealth around, I think it’s good for everybody.” * “Thank you Sioux City” Obama said in Sioux Falls. * “My father served in World War II, and when he came home, he got the services that he needed.” (At the end of WWII, Obama’s father was 10 years old.) * Obama suggested that we need Arabic translators in Afghanistan, where they don’t speak Arabic. * “Well, Tim, first of all, it's not me who's criticized these proposals,” Obama said to Matt Lauer. * “Anybody gone into Whole Foods lately and see what they charge for arugula?...I mean, they're charging a lot of money for this stuff,” Obama said to a crowd in Iowa, where there are no Whole Foods. * “Well let me be absolutely clear. Israel is a strong friend of Israel's.” * “Israel is an ally of ours. It is the most important ally we have in the region, and there is no doubt that we would act forcefully and appropriately on any attack against Iran, nuclear or otherwise.” * “I'm running to be commander of chief on a record of standing up for our wounded warriors.” * "If I talked to Iran, I'm going to tell them, 'You should develop a nuclear weapon...'"

"If I remember correctly, he misspelled SYRACUSE when he was filling out his brackets for MARCH MADNESS this past Spring . . . "

Thanks, I remember it now. I just checked, and he spelled it "Sycasuse", all in caps. That's the kind of thing I was looking for.

Regarding other comments to my post, they are correct in pointing out that Obama's gaffes are pretty much ALWAYS ignored by the mainstream press, whereas any by Bush or Palin are repeated incessantly till they define the person and become part of the national lore.

Journalists always thinks in terms of a theme or story line rather than a simple recitation of the facts. In other words, they tend to evaluate facts in terms of their preferred story line. Thus, facts inconsistent with the Obama-is-brilliant story line are passed over, whereas facts consistent with the Bush/Palin-is-dumb story line are jumped on with vigor. The general public thus is served a very selective presentation of the facts, and distorted images of public figures gain currency.
