A group of seven mild-mannered chess players are due in criminal court next month after police officers from the 34th Precinct issued them summonses for playing their favorite board game in Inwood Hill Park.
The men were ticketed on Oct. 20 for being inside of Emerson Playground, a children's play area off limits to adults unaccompanied by minors. But the men were in an area furnished with stone chess and backgammon tables separated from the play area by a fence.
"There is a problem in this area with drug dealing, but the police have time to write tickets to people playing chess?" asked Yacahudah Harrison, 48, one of the men who received a summons for "Fail[ing] to comply with signs."
The men said the police pulled right up to the corner of 207th Street and Seaman Avenue, and came directly to their table. Now they're due in criminal court on Dec. 28.
Captain Jose Navarro, of the 34th Precinct, told DNAinfo he had reviewed the ticket and stood by his officers' actions.

How many “children” are playing chess and backgammon, especially on a school day?
Chess Ping!

Makes perfect sense to me. Doesn’t every playgound have a chess area set aside for the 5 year olds?
/sarc.
Actually this is yet another “benefit” of gays getting special rights. They get the right to bugger little children - serve a few years in jail - and then get released to offend again.
Because this is true, normal people like these chess players suffer.
Well golly! You never know about those crazy chess players. Obvious scofflaws and ne’r-do-wells...
Some of them even drink scotch and smoke Indonesian cigarettes.
I applaud the NYPD.
The police in New York have ended all drug dealing. There are no murders, rapes, or robberies there anymore. No burglaries, child molestation, or assaults.
It most be wonderful to have all that free time so they can bust chess players. s/
What choice did they have? If they bust the Chinese Checkers players, they’ll be accused of racial profiling.
Which chess piece moves first, white or African-American?
One white piece moves first, then a half-dozen of the African-American pieces move onto that square. Then all the rest of the white pieces move.
LOL, we shouldn't take this lightly. Police suspicions were aroused when many of the chess players openly admitted they came there to mate.
“Then all the rest of the white pieces move.”
Yeah. Out.
Such areas should not exist in a public space.
At least they weren’t trash-talking in a spacious hotel lobby — chess nuts boasting in an open foyer, as it were. . . .
Will you really teach me how to play "hide the bishop"?
Something similar happened i n Los Angeles a few years ago. In the Rampart district, on of the city’s most crime-ridden neighborhoods, cops busted a chess game in a doughnut shop. Seems they were unfamiliar with the game and thought the men were gambling.
Let’s start a gang in collusion with these New York chaps and take on the shogi yakuza.
Actually, they were popped for not having a white square in the lower right corner of the board.
