NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Unemployed Americans have collected $319 billion in jobless benefits over the past three years due to the federal government's unprecedented response to the Great Recession, according to a CNNMoney analysis of federal records.
The cost of such benefits will be central to the heated debate in Congress in coming weeks over whether to extend this safety net for the fifth time this year. Lawmakers must act by Nov. 30 or two million people will start losing extended benefits next month.

Well that is a real change from Bush as Obama promised.
Tie off the teat.
Most of the claims came during Obama’s tenure...
The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
"[Unemployment Checks] injects demand into the economy," Pelosi said, arguing that when families have money to spend it keeps the economy churning. "It creates jobs faster than almost any other initiative you can name."
Pelousinomics says that this $319 BILLION expenditure has created a gazillion jobs by now. We should all be thankful for the wizards of smart we send to Washington.
They should — at the very least — call it Welfare.
yep.. I wonder how long this can go on? 3 years, 5 years ?
And it’s increasing every day
WE’VE_FINALLY_ACHIEVED_SERFDOM_PING!!!
I don’t understand Obama said he created three million jobs how can this be?. /S
I’m in the employment business and I talk to these people every day. We call them and tell them about job openings, which they often refuse. They say: “Why should I take a job for $12/hour when I’m getting $10/hour on unemployment?” Well...umm...good question. And many of them have another job - painting, landscaping, waiting tables - getting paid cash under the table. They won’t even take a $15/hour job. Don’t worry about benefits, the gov’t has them covered. And food stamps, and help with their heating bills, and on and on.
If we cut off unemployment benefits, many of these people will find a job. Guaranteed. If it’s 52 weeks unemployment they find a job week 53. If it’s 99 weeks unemployment they find a job week 100. Sorry but our country just can’t afford to spend three hundred BILLION dollars and have nothing to show for it. That’s about a thousand bucks for every person in the country. So my family ponies up five grand.
I know there are people who legitimately need help. But it’s time to end the free rides. We can’t afford it any more.
Agree a free ride is a way of life for far to many.
