Obama Pushes DREAM Act Immigration Reform for Lame-Duck Congress

ABC News’ Sunlen Miller and Devin Dwyer report: President Obama today joined top Congressional Democrats in urging Congress to pass a small piece of immigration legislation known as the DREAM Act before it adjourns for the year. The measure would give hundreds of thousands of young, undocumented immigrants a conditional path to legal residency.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid has repeatedly promised a vote on the measure during the lame-duck session. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has also expressed support for bringing a bill to the floor, although not until after Thanksgiving.

“This legislation has traditionally enjoyed support from Democratic and Republican lawmakers and would give young people who were brought as minors to the United States by their parents the opportunity to earn their citizenship by pursuing a college degree or through military service,” the White House said in a statement following the president’s closed-door meeting with leaders of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus this afternoon.

The DREAM Act would apply to immigrants younger than 36 years old who arrived in the U.S. illegally as children under the supervision of their parents and have maintained "good moral character," among other requirements.

The Progressives wanted a public option in healthcare but didn’t get one. They want amnesty for 12 -20 million votes but can’t get it all at once. They want to control energy costs but can’t get cap and trade passed. They are very patient. They got Obamacare and if they can make large corporations abandon their employee’s healthcare plans, they will “have no choice” but to offer a public option. They want full amnesty but will take a little bit at a time until they get what they want. The DREAM act is the beginning. They couldn’t get cap and trade but got around Congress via the EPA. Little by little they are taking control of this Republic and unless the average American gets their head out of the boob tube and off the Government dole and starts to hold their Government liable for their actions, all will be lost.

If these were presumed to be future GOP votes, that border would be closed in a heartbeat. As it is it is treason pure and simple.

That’s a fact.

Mexicans may have many virtues, but being Americans is not one of them. In the 45 years or so of untrammeled illegal mass immigration into the US, Mexicans have not assimilated. They have a separatist and racialist identity (official slogan of La Raza - 'For Those Inside the Race, everything, for those outside the race, nothing') and have remained in poverty.

“a small piece of immigration legislation known as the DREAM Act ...”

ABC News has joined the Obama staff. This legislation will result in the largest amnesty, much larger than the 1986 Amnesty. This legislation is no small piece of immigration legislation. It is close to blanket amnesty.

Actually, I would support the Dream Act if the requirement was only a military enlistment option....drop the college option. If someone who came here when they were two....has graduated high school here...and is willing to serve 4 years in our military with an honorable discharge.. then I say give them a green card. At some point in time you’ve got to give these kids a break if they are willing to contribute to society....they did not choose to break the law...their parents did.

Life might get real difficult for some of them.

Most of them will never return to their districts again. They will move their families out before the end of the session.

I like your thinking though, has real possibilities.

...a conditional path to legal residency

I thought we already had that.

Meet the conditions, become a legal resident. Simple.

Uh, those conditions would be the ones we already have in place.

Isn't one of those "new" conditions to serve time in the US Military?

Wouldn't the same conditional path apply to oh, let's say...Muslims??

Pandora's Box??

"I don't think they have the votes"

They don't have the votes in the Senate...and Nancy wants to wait until after Thanksgiving in the House.

They're just playing identity politics for a couple of days to placate their stupid base.

There is NO GOP member of the Senate that would vote for this in the Lame Duck...and there's at least a dozen Dim Senators that won't either.

We got these guys FEARING us...and it's about damn time.

We need to increase their fear every two years as we cull the commies and traitors of both parties.

I believe the left took control decades ago- in the schools, the media, the foundations, the CIA,and the civil service (etc etc). It is a slow process, but they have been winning and Obamacare was something they wanted for decades. I will be shocked if the Repubs ever repeal it. It will probably be stopped because we can’t pay for universal heathcare, which is what the left wants. 2010 was a major step nonetheless. With things like Obamacare and the TSA groping ordinary Americans, they have overplayed their hands, IMO. They do the DREAM Act? 2012 will make 2010 look like a win to to the Dems.

Agree with you. However I have some concerns about the ability to bring in lots of relatives once a person gets the green card.

I dont think this is likely to pass. Not after what happened on election day.

Little by little, piece by piece, they keep making illegals legal. Bush did it, Clinton did it, they all do it with Congress’s help.

I hate it when supposedly objective news organizations call certain bills “reform” bills. No one is supposed to be against reform bills you know.

You’ve hit the nail on the head. But if the Progressives are really following the Alinsky doctrine, they must first crash the capitalist system before they can lead us to their socialist utopia. Granting citizenship and puting 12 to 20 million illegals on the Government dole may be all that’s need to accomplish that. Of course, that will mean 12 to 20 million new Democratic voters.
