Susan Sher, chief of staff to First Lady Michelle Obama and a key White House liaison to the Jewish community, plans to return to Chicago at the beginning of next year, the White House said Tuesday.
“Susan has been both a colleague and a dear friend for decades, and I have been grateful every day for her leadership and wise counsel in Washington,” First Lady Michelle Obama said in a statement. “I also very much appreciate her generosity in staying longer than she initially planned – spending so many months away from her family in Chicago – to help me build my office in the East Wing. I wish her all the best.”
“Susan has brought tremendous skill and dedication to the First Lady’s office, as well as my Administration’s outreach to the Jewish Community and our efforts to pass health care reform, and I thank her for her service,” President Obama said.
Sher started in the White House Counsel’s Office in January, 2009, and was involved in the Administration's health care reform efforts. She was named chief of staff to the First Lady in June 2009.
“There’s no question we’re trying to do more outreach and communications,” Sher told me in an interview in August regarding the White House's stepped up Jewish outreach efforts. "I don’t think the policies have changed, but I think we appreciate we could do a better job of communicating what the policies were and what are the reasons for them.”
“My impression is that we probably undercommunicated and the more we explain what is being done and why, the more satisfied the various constituencies seem to be,” Sher said.
A replacement has not yet been named.

I really wonder what these arrogant, demanding, clueless Obamas think about all their underlings running away from them. I’m willing to bet they blame “racism”.

Isn’t this her second chief of staff leaving? I seem to recall the first one left about a year ago.
They need to cycle them through for one year at the high salaries and benefits so they can bloat their pensions.
I sense that she is using the word "office" in an improper sense. FLOTUS does not hold an 'office' in government.
No one is “bailing” or “running away”...this happens in every administration. These jobs are incredibly demanding and as Michelle said, this lady left her family in Chicago to serve. They have been friends for decades. As were many in the Bush and Clinton admins...but left after a couple of years. No one can imagine how difficult these jobs are. They will remain friends always and these people serve us as well. This is not unusual at all.
We don’t get many Michelle lovers here on FR, particularly ones who regurgitate white house talking points. Good luck defending the Obamas, you’ll need it.
Short version: Michelle’s staff has had it with her shrieking tirades and personal abuse.
She clearly drank the kool-aid as to the theme that their only problem is not communicating their agenda and messages well enough.
I was not regurgitating anything. I have had family members who worked for several admins. I know how difficult the jobs are. When those in the George W. admin started leaving, the dems said much the same. Esp Karen Hughes. Hughes simply wanted to raise her kids in Texas. It was Not a reflection of her loyalty or dedication to George W.
