Northrop Grumman has received a $189.2 million contract modification to continue design of a new aircraft carrier for the U.S. Navy.

The USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) is the first ship of the Gerald R. Ford class whose keel was laid Nov. 14, 2009.

Enhancements incorporated into the design of the ship include flight deck changes, improved weapons handling systems and a redesigned island, all resulting in increased aircraft sortie rates.

Maybe they ought to install a disco in case DADT gets knocked down.

No offense to Navy vet and Executive Office placeholder President Ford, but it is a travesty to have our next class of carriers named after him. Sure, name the second in class after him, but the class and first of class should be named Enterprise, as the current Enterprise is to be decommissioned in 2011.

There should always be a USS Enterprise, and it should be a capital ship of The United States Navy.

Absolutely!

I hear though this new class will have a non steam catapult, will be a magnetic system.

Well I hope that write in campaign works but based on the fact that there is a Navy ship named after John Murtha it doesn’t appear the Navy gives much of a damn what U.S. citizens think.

Poorly.

I believe that there were a massive campaigns by Trekkers in 1970s to name the first shuttle Enterprise. That write campaign seemed to work. I believe the shuttle Endeavor was named after a write in campaign

Yes, the Trekkie write-in led to the name Enterprise being applied to the world’s largest glider, with no engines, life support systems or space flight capabilities.

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

the current Enterprise is to be decommissioned in 2011.

Incorrect. Enterprise is scheduled to be decommissioned in FY 2013 per the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2010.

No reason not to name the new class and first ship Enterprise as none of the new class will be commissioned before 2014.

Sorry, but you're nitpicking.

Only a year after laying the keel, they are making major design changes to the tune of $200 million?? Can that be right? Did technology evolve that much in a year to necessitate the big design changes? Or was the design finalized in 1970 and they only got around to building it this year?

CVN 78 is scheduled to be commissioned in September of 2015. The original super carrier wasn't named Enterprise and I doubt you have any idea how many years the Navy existed without a carrier named Enterprise.

Sorry, but you're nitpicking.

That's an obamaesque way of admitting that you're full of s***.

The Enterprise is still considered the first Space Shuttle From Wiki:

The Space Shuttle Enterprise (NASA Orbiter Vehicle Designation: OV-101) was the first Space Shuttle orbiter. It was built for NASA as part of the Space Shuttle program to perform test flights in the atmosphere
