GRAND FORKS, N.D. - Duke without the Blue Devil? Notre Dame without the Fighting Irish? Most students and alumni at those proud universities wouldn't dream of dropping those enduring symbols of school pride.

I’m not sure, but I think the Illini tribe is extinct — there’s no one to protest.

Tribal map.

Dakota might be an option.

Will the NCAA force Central Michigan University to change from the Chippewas to, say, the Centrists? Michigan is an Indian name too. We could call the LP Mittengan and the UP, well, they’re on their own.

Joseph would still likely fight the NCAA to stop the elimination of Indian history and presence in the US.

When I wuz a kid the BSA were quite Indian centric, promoting the good parts of the cultures.

Yep, and I was also in the YMCA Indian Guides.

In other news the NCAA has also designated that scalpers will now be referred to as undocumented ticket agents.

I was also in the BSA and found that to be true. Before that, I was in the Indian Guides, a program sponsored by the Young Men's Christian Associan for fathers and sons. Indian Guides taught young boys--and their fathers--to appreciate America's Indian heritage and even conducted toy drives to benefit needy Indian children. Nonetheless, the program was politically incorrect by the standards set by today's left-liberal establishment and was discontinued some years ago.

Sioux is actually the spelling given to the tribes by the French in 1640-

So it`s a French word, not Indian. "The name "Sioux" is an abbreviated form of Nadouessioux borrowed into French Canadian from Nadoüessioüak from the early Odawa exonym: naadowesiwag "Sioux".[8] Jean Nicolet recorded the use in 1640.[5 wikipedia

Also "Indian" is the word Columbus gave the native people of the islands because he thoought he was in India. So "Indian" is a word first used by an ITALIAN, subsequently translated into english.

Excuse me, but since when does the NAACP have standing or the responsibility to dictate what is and what is not acceptable.
If this is so offensive, where are the Native Indian tribes like the Sioux making this and issue. WHO ELECTED THE NAACP TO TELL US WHAT RACISM IS? I do not see the word Sioux in there name? And why isn’t USD asking these questions, instead of just doing what some leftest race batters say?

Opps sorry read the title wrong, but still it not up to the NCAA. In actuality both groups are similar.

The Native Americans could not write out their names nor tribal nor clan names; they used pictographs until they learned French, Dutch, English, Spanish etc...My great great great-great-Abneki grandmother could not spell nor write her name nor her tribal affiliation in French nor English.

Anybody see a couple of weeks back in the intro’s to Monday night football when one of the lineman on the Bears introduced himself as a graduate of “the Univeristy of Chief Illiniwek”? I loved that.

By the way, North Dakota State should change their name to the “North Dakota State Officious NCAA Pussies”. I don’t think any Indians would be offended by that.

Or at the very least, wear uniforms that read “North Dakota State _________” - let the fans mentally fill in the blank with what they deem appropriate, and dare the NCAA to read their minds.

Stinking politically-correct thought-police bureaucrats.

Stinking politically-correct thought-police bureaucrats.

And it seems to be mainly in America too. I run into Europeon tourists all the time who ask about our local "Indian" tribe and then quickly correct themeselves: "I, mean Native American tribe." I always reply "Well, the local 'Indian' tribe..."

I can't stand political correctness.

The school should change its mascot to the “Fighting 7th Cavalry”.

So does that mean you want the school to go the way oc Custer at the Little Bib Horn?
Crazy Horse is laughing

The impetus for abolishing Indian nicknames was the discovery by Rep. Cardis Collins (D-IL) in 1993 that the NCAA had an Eugenics office “for hiring a closely-knit group of researchers who were members of an extremist organization, known as Beyondism, which favors such policies as eugenic, or hereditary improvement by genetic control.”
Beyondism “is an increasing acceptance of reality, and that involves dropping the emotional support of a loving omnipotent god. Humans are not the ‘apple of G-d’s eye’ but only a chance species, whose survival depends upon their own efforts.”
http://www.ferris.edu/isar/bios/cattell/genetica.htm
The NCAA launched a diversionary counterattack on Indian names. Most people are infected with PC and most people don’t know about Eugencics. The media helps with the counterattack.
One of the targets was UND and their booster Ralph Engelstad, a 1948-49 UND goalie who became a construction tycoon and Las Vegas casino owner with a Nazi fetish. More on the Internet. Engelstad also was an UNLV booster. The NCAA was sanctioned by UNLV in 1992.
It’s fair to say Engelstad was the NCAA’s biggest critic and the NCAA was the biggest critic of Engelstad.
So, Engelstad in 1997 announced he would built the finest college hockey arena in the world and leased it to UND for $1 a year if UND never changed the school’s logo and name. UND agreed and Engelstad adorned it with thousands of Fighting Sioux logos, including, if I remember right, statues on the walls that can’t be removed or the walls will fall down!
I guess UND lost their last lawsuit against the NCAA. If I remember, there was hanky-panky about the other tribe changing their support of UND.

I was in the Indian Guides too in the 70’s. It was great for building character. It’s #1 pledge: “Pals forever with my dad”. Terrible, racist stuff like THAT has to stop.

I’d pay to see them rename the team the “NCAA Dickheads”.
