Low GOP Turnout Keeps California in Democratic Hands
ChicoER ^ | 11/15/10 | Joe Newby

On Tuesday, November 2, voters across the country turned out in droves to give Republicans control of the House of Representatives. GOP wins in the U.S. Senate trimmed the Democratic majority, and over 675 State legislative seats were taken from Democrats nationwide. So historic was the win that the Minnesota Senate will be run by Republicans for the first time in that state's history, and Alabama will be in GOP hands for the first time since reconstruction.

But what happened to California?

Are Californians really so liberal that they would elect a man who was once known as "Governor Moonbeam" back into the highest position in the state? Is Barbara "Don't call me Ma'am" Boxer so revered that she would win as easily as she did?

The results in California left many across the country scratching their heads wondering what happened in the Golden State. Was it something in the water? Was it negative advertising?

A careful analysis of the election results may reveal the true reason California remains in Democratic control.

Democrats have a significant advantage in voter registration in California, a point made by GOP candidate Carly Fiorina in her concession speech. According to the Sacramento Bee, Fiorina said,

"we could not overcome the (2.3 million) registration advantage the Democrats have, particularly in Los Angeles."

As the following illustration shows, Democrats have had a significant advantage in registration for years, but the numbers of those who declined to state their party preference could easily make the difference between Democratic and Republican victory.

When one does the math, a different story emerges. Out of the 17 million registered voters, over 5 million are registered Republicans. Let us assume for the sake of argument, that Fiorina received only Republican votes. The numbers indicate that 1.6 million GOP voters stayed home, and a similar pattern can be seen in the Governor’s race:

Many pundits on both sides of the political isle have given their reasons why California was not effected by the Teanami that swept the nation. Yet my friend Joe Newby is the first and so far the only one I know of that has looked at the numbers and concluded that California's problem on Nov 2 was voter apathy by the Republicans. Not the Democrat's edge in registration or their appeal to the voters. If you don't vote, than you cannot complain about the way your state is run. Republicans in California are going to soon find out why voting in mid term elections is their best chance of checking the Democrats power. Sooner or later Republicans will have to wake up, or California will cease to be a viable place to live.

California is a lost cause. The GOP should just write it off and save their money for races they can win in other states.

*** he GOP should just write it off and save their money for races they can win in other states. ***

Or maybe the California GOP should find candidates that will energize their Republicans.

Wrong. Fiorina ran a strong Constitutionalist, Pro Life, Pro Gun Conservative.

I know I met her and followed her.

Nut Meg was a different story, I agree about her.

IMHO, it is inexcusable not to have voted in this election. They will get what they deserve!! But R’s in California please stay there dont come to Texas and sit and/or change our state government.

I see it all the time here in TExas, my neighbors are all from Cali left because of the politics but still have that Cali mindset and vote that way. IT really pisses me off, just sayin

Needed to vent, sorry.,

Sooner or later Republicans will have to wake up, or California will cease to be a viable place to live. has ceased to be a viable place to live a long time ago.

If the Republicans failed to vote, that is the fault of the State GOP and the Candidates for not havinbg an effective ground game. On the other hand, maybe they have 5 million registered voters, but it is possible the 1.5 million who didn’t vote no longer live in the State which would be logical.

Fiorina was an EXCELLENT conservative candidate. Fabulous conservative candidate. Any conservative who stayed home should be horse-whipped.

They both decided that Sarah Palin’s support would be too polarizing. It appears that it unpolarized a substantial number of conservatives who may well have turned out. The left and moderates votes weren’t affected.

Proof again that RINO’s shouting in our faces “Oh yeah, well who are you going to vote for then, the Democrat????” doesn’t work any more.

Thanks for nothing Meg — literally, nothing

Methinks that most of the members of the California GOP “stayed home” by moving out of state.

I'm sure California Republicans turned out in droves, but they turned out in AZ, NV, Idaho and the other states to which they have moved.

The only thing involving CA that is left to fight over is keeping California's money grubbing, socialist hands off federal dollars to bail out their sorry asses. Red states are going to have to fight hard to keep from being forced to support the Loafer State of CA.
